Yes. I grew up hungry. It can be placed on "pride" as much as anything. We did not want help... and to this day, i would rather shoot myself in the head as ask for anything.

Is that good? Probably not. Is is correct? Not when children are hungry. Again, that is from experience. I was put into hospital a couple of times as a kid from the consequence of malnutrition. This was in the early 1950's in outback Wyoming.

Pride. Stubborness.

Yes. It is probably true. But that is something Europeans need to think about when dealing with the US.
