Those pics in the ST look pretty real to me.
I don't think Mike is being xenophobic; at worst he was just taken in by a realistic hoax about a nation with a history and reputation for eating weird stuff and an underground demand for the illegal also.
There was a program on TV this week in the UK showing a open air Chinese food market with everything from cooked rats to grilled scorpions on a stick. One guy was filmed eating chicken fetus straight out of the egg shell.
