If I knew then what I knew now, what nickname would I choose? Certainly nothing like the one I have. For a start, it makes people think I'm a female ...

I'm still thinking, no inspiration yet ...

We have something in common! I don't want to change mine, though.

did you seriously think that folks would think Miss Oleum would be a male? I think it was done to deceive, but you can correct me if I am wrong!

Too late for us, but it would have been nice if there were something like a warning BEFORE first opening the account that said to give your username some serious thought because you would never be able to change it.

Wait, aren't you a female?

Your profile even says that you are, "Eccentric old lady with 2 cats, lots of time for play and chat. Unrepentantly incompetent chessplayer. P1200s welcome. If you don't like in-game chat please don't challenge me to a game." (emphasis added)

When I signed up in March 2005, it was clear that you could NEVER change your username. Has something changed?

That's one reason why I chose "Nordlys". I quite enjoyed being called "Brother Nord" (even though I have never lied about my gender). 😀

I wonder who will have the courage to ask if you looked like a man? 😛

actually I am a female, the "old lady with cats" is only a slight exaggeration (I'm 63) and I'm just winding you up now 😀. But seriously, this was the first forum I'd ever participated in. And if I'd realised how much trouble it would get me into, I'd have picked something like ZAX.

There certainly was no warning when I signed up in 2001, but perhaps you do get a warning now.

I remember it said you shouldn't use your real name, which was somewhat surprising to me because I was in another forum where you were not allowed not to use your real name. I don't remember a warning that you won't be able to ever change your user name, but it may have been there.

I would have thought using your real name is a little dangerous, in this day and age, I'm not sure how they can justify it.

It was introduced because people seem to be less likely to troll and spam if they have to use their real name. You don't have to use your full name, though. I don't remember the exact rules, but I think the first name and the first letter of your last name is enough, although most people use their full name.
