Was wondering if someone could help me out with the following problem
my good pc was ok last night when i shut it down and then tonight when i turned it on it came up with the message
windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
/windows/system32/config/system.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
I dont have the original setup cd-rom,can someone help?
Originally posted by boarmanNope, you need an XP cd to fix it.

Didn't you get a backup or recovery disk with the computer?
Anyway, here's the M$ instructions.

nb.
If you just completely reinstall windows with your friends CD you could have activation problems [so be careful] unless you have your own Key Code.
As Daemon Sin is about to say, it would be easier to use their CD.
Originally posted by boarmanhow far into the boot process do you get...? can you hold down f8 while booting, just before the error message... if so, you could do a system restore in safe mode... in fact if it brings up a menu after pressing f8, simply select "last known good configuration" which will actomatically restore the registry before the file became corrupt

Can anyone help with this?
If the shop reinstalled Windows, they maybe didn't reinstall all the drivers.
Did you get a disk with them for your computer when you bought it?
If not, you can go to the manufacturers website and find them, then reinstall the sound drivers.
That's one of several possibilities.

- check that the 'mute' box on your volume control panel is unchecked (you'd be surprised how often this is the reason)
- if you have a separate audio card, check that it's properly in place. sometimes cards loosen up.
- check/reinstall audio drivers
if none of these helped, and taking into account your booting problems, I'd guess your OS might've been corrupted too much over time to work properly. it's a common problem especially if your gear is suffering from overheating. a clean re-install should do the trick then. but if the problems re-appear fast after re-installing windows, it's probably a hardware problem which manifests itself as instability (crashing, freezing often). in that case it might be your hard disk, motherboard, even power supply. I suppose broken ram might do it as well, but I've never had that (I've had loosened ram blocks though).
oh, and of course your soundcard might've broken, but it seems a bit unlikely coincidence (although such things have happened to me). it's more probable that all your problems are interconnected.
