I spent today lounging in my mate's pool listening to the cricket. Not a bad way to spend a day, especially when it's 37 degrees. The cricket itself though... India put together an enormous partnership on day 2 and seem to have ensured a draw at the very least.
Leave Gillespie's haircut alone Werner, I'm a little touchy at the moment.
I'm feeling kinda the same.
Chris Gayle came in today to open the windies 1st innings after a bad hamstring injury kept him out of the previous test and proceeded to obliterate our bowling attack. He's not out at the end of day 2 with 112 off 105 deliveries (20 fours, 1 six).
The windies have struggled in this series, they have a pretty young and inexperinced side and haven't troubled us once.
Gayle is now just irratating me 😛

You have two sides: One out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When both sides have been in and out including the not outs,
That's the end of the game.
😀
Bowled, Caught, Stumped, Run out, Hit Wicket, LBW (do you count Caught & Bowled as a distinct dimissal?).The ten ways of being are (I think)
The more obscure ones:
Handling the ball;
Interference with a fielder (trying to catch the ball);
I think you can also be given out for conduct unbecoming (not sure)??
Running after hitting the ball twice??
I can't think of other ones...
Bowled
Caught
Stumped
LBW
Run Out
Hit Wicket
Handled the Ball
Obstructing the Field (not necessarily while trying to catch the ball!)
Hit the Ball Twice
Timed Out
Go Middlesex Crusaders in 2004!

I'm sure you can hit the ball as many times as you like (keeping it away from the stumps) - you just can't attempt a run after doing so...
It's not things you see often so I'm unclear as well.
What happens if you're timed out? If a batsmen slows down the game on purpose? I expect that only happens in 1 Day time-out games in tournaments or clan games 😛
Go Gibbs!
Originally posted by CrowleyAm not sure about this either but I think you can only hit the ball once (deliberately). So if you hit the ball once but it is still going towards the stumps or in the air to a close fielder, you are out if you hit it again. You sometimes see a batsman who has blocked the ball tap it to a fieldsman, but that is just being polite because the ball is accepted as dead.

Time out I think is all forms of cricket - the fielding side can claim a wicket if the new batsman is not on the field within 2 minutes. Not sure if it has ever happened in internationals.
Crowley, you did a fine job of explaining a very complicated (but beautiful) game in only a few paragraphs!
Have we tried to explain leg before wicket yet?

No, you can definately hit the ball again. I think the rules state that you just can't run. Will check up on this.

Aaah, that makes sense.

Thanx. Flattery will get you everywhere 🙂
And what a game!

Not yet.
Tried to explain LBW to my mother today. I actually ended up with my bat in my hands and some cardboard boxes for wickets, trying to show her how it works.
Needless to say, it didn't work.
Some people will just never get it 😛
OK, I'm actually enjoying this now 😛
Leg Before Wicket (in my words). This is something that a lot of people struggle with:
First of all, LBW is not confined to just a leg before the wicket. Any part of the batsmen's body can be judged to be LBW (except his hands and arms - I think).
Three things have to happen for a batsmen to be adjudged LBW:
-The ball has to be going on to hit the stumps
-The ball has to hit the batsmen in-line (imagine a thick line drawn from stumps to stumps)
-The ball has to pitch on the 'off' side (the 'off' side is (for a right-handed batsman) the right hand side of the field when looking towards the bowler from the batsman's end) or in line with the stumps
Sheesh, hope that makes sense...
A batsman can never be given out if the ball has piched outside the leg stump.
The bowler bowls a legal delivery, the above things have to happen, the umpire has to make a decision (with a ball that has travelled to the batsman in about 0.5 of a second).
Applause please...
Oh, BTW, the bowler has to appeal.
Then the umpire can make a decision.
Woke up at 5am this morning and was shocked to see Australia struggling against India.200 and something for 4 just before lunch on the final day.I must explain that the shock I felt was a happy shock.I am still smiling.Kumble for president.
GO INDIA!!!
I will post an update shortly. The internet, what a lovely medium indeed.

Most people dont get passed seven!
The tenth way is timed out. This is at the discretion of the umpires, but l dont know of an instance where it has happened. Supposedly you have a certain amount of time to make your way to the wicket at the start of play and at the fall of a wicket.
Cheers,
Martin

Australia drew the fourth test with India today, leaving the series 1-1, with two draws. Unfortunately, because India won last series they got to take the cup home again. :'(
Steve Waugh, in his last ever match for Australia, almost reached triple figures when he was caught out near the rope. He was batting well too.
It was still a good game, even with the drawn result.
Yes Australia forced the draw.Pity.It was one of the best matches I have watched in the last few years.Seeing the last of Steve Waugh was sad in a way.Remember I am South African.Watching him walking out onto the pitch today I couldnt help but wonder what was going through his mind.168 Tests and over 10000 test runs.He will be missed. Now for Ricky Ponting to start tormenting us.
Another thing while we are talking about the Aussies.I firmly believe players should be prevented from chewing gum while playing in a match that is being televised.I get more nervous watching these guys chew than watching Brett Lee steaming in.
Oh and I always wonder how the hell does Adam Gilchrist get that helmet over his ears.

You sometimes see a batsman who has blocked the ball tap it to a fieldsman, but that is just being polite because the ball is accepted as dead. This is not quite true - you can hit the ball again to prevent the ball from hitting the stumps - if you hit the ball again for any other reason you can be given out hit the ball twice, although the politeness thing happens quite a lot.
Time out I think is all fo ...[text shortened]... w batsman is not on the field within 2 minutes. Not sure if it has ever happened in internationals.
