I have noticed that frequently I have been paired with individuals who's ability seems far beyond their current rating. They seem to play with an ability far beyond their rating. This does not seem right. Has anybody else out there experienced this? Please share if so, and if not maybe your thoughts of this subject might help
Thank You

Some games I play fast and loose, some I play carefully, normally dependent on how much ale I've consumed.

I agree Cadwar!

Most of the time I underestimate people because of their rating. The rating thing is obviously a ruse, a ploy to get you to play someone who'll suck the life out of your game!

Is this another case of rating discrimination?

Do you have a couple of specific games as examples that you could point to? Perhaps your opponents did make mistakes and you happened to overlook them.

Agreed. In my experience here and as a successful OTB player and chess teacher of over 30 years I am lead to believe that some players here in the range of 1300 to 1600+ sometimes use computer "assistance" since the concepts their moves initiate would indicate a player of much greater strength. Just my opinion.

Well, I know what I said but that's really not my view. I find it hard to believe a 900 player could tell the difference in a beating by a 1300 or 1900 player, even I can get a run going winning a game by 5 pieces rather than just a pawn here and again.

Another thing that happens is you get players who are on an up- or a down-swing, for whatever reason (too many games, too much wine as in my case, whatever). also I've played folks who are new and have a rating which is skyrocketing but when I get them they're at around my rating. Soon enough though they take points from me on their way up....

I think its more likely that every now and then they just spot the right move.

its more pronounced on the speed chess where you often come across
people who are powerful players just working out, their rating is low but they play a heavy fast game
