In another thread, VR asked, "How long can you hold a plank?"

In my case, about 20 or 30 seconds, but I'm not a regular practitioner.

Wall-sitting seems to be another efficient exercise that engages a lot of muscle tissue in time under tension.

For those who actually do any kind of physical exercise, what do you like to do and which ones do you find to be efficient (short time needed for good results)?

If you don't mind my asking, how long can you hold a plank?

I also remember your PM J. Trudeau likes to do hand-balancing planks on conference tables. Do you happen to know how long he can hold a plank?

I do Qigong and Taiji for about an hour and twenty every day. Lots of leg work.

I'm very sporadic in my exercising, but for leg work I do squats with dumbbells or kettlebells, iron-horse stance, and wall-sitting a few times a year.

@Kevin-Eleven

I'm a Taijiquan instructor, but not much happening since the vid that shall not be named. I plan on getting my black belt in Kenpo for shets and giggles when everything opens up.

This past year I got a new ab wheel for my exercise-toy collection, the type that has a spring inside to help with the return part of the rep. I was surprised to find that I don't really seem to need that, and that my core was already stronger than I thought. Some overlap with the toning or at least tension that planks provide, including around the ribcage, not just the abs themselves.

This ab wheel also has handles whose curved shape makes it easier on my wrists than straight cylinders would be. I have vaguely similar handles on my hybrid commuter bike for the same reason (lifelong bicyclist; never owned a car). On a side note from that, I don't like doing pushups with hands flat on the floor because it seems hard on my wrists, but I don't mind pushups if I use handles of some sort.

Regrets in advance for responding to your pleasantly succinct and poetic post with more tiresome and prosaic paragraphs. 😉

Cats have me thinking that we need some, but not much (or at least not as much as some might think), exercise for general health maintenance [distinct from training martial-arts or other specialized physical skills]. Some stretching, some movement, some bursts of activity -- maybe that's enough. Who ever catches lions bench-pressing on the savannah?

As for breathing, leaving aside the contra-breatharians and their goal to breathe only qi, sometime in the past few years I became aware of the Buteyko Method and related books by Artour Rakhimov, which propose that a lot of people of the present day are actually hyperventilating and would benefit from breathing less.

I don't remember clearly, but it has to do with a higher level of CO2 in the blood facilitating O2 transport across cell membranes, or something like that, so if people breathe too much or too deeply or too often, that actually inhibits O2 utilization. I'll leave it to interested parties to explore this if they wish.

Handles are better because you get more range of motion with them in place.
