we are crap and will not beat whoever we get in the next round, too much i hear this is our time, this is the golden generation, the talent is too good and is a selection dilemma, give me the old guard back of the 90s, they were players, Gazza, Lineker, Ince, Pearce, Seaman, Neville, Sheringham, Shearer, Butcher, Shilton, Barnes, Waddle, apologies to any great players i have missed

Historically Italy have been one of the most successful European nations in international football by playing very defensive football in the group stages. Germany's tournament successes are also attributed to well organised sides that start slow and only get more adventurous as the tournament progresses. England's opening game was dull by design with our lea ...[text shortened]... ly forgotten because he got it all wrong against Scotland. You're only as good as your last match. 😁
I agree with this assessment.

Also winning is a habit as they say and also winning well sets out some fear in your next opponent. Who would have fancied playing Germany after their first game, and who after their second!

@divegeester
There are a lot of people that know more about football than I do.
Being a German (first generation Canadian), I am reasonably familiar with German play. I find that Germany plays the same when they are up 4 goals as when they are down 4 goals. It either works or it doesn't. When their game is on, impressive !! When it isn't, ordinary. Square heads I call them. 😆
Italy, it is almost an art form, different from say, Brazil, but an art form.
Same with Spain, Portugal. France ? I'm not sure with them. They come and go with talent.

England ?? I call their game "set piece" football. They rely on free kicks and corners for much of their offence.
Their most significant contribution to football ? A movie. Bend It Like Beckham.

Yeah fair criticism, and we are our own worst critics.

The England team which won the World Cup in ‘66 and the England teams of Italia 90 and Euro 96 each possessed a total belief in themselves and had managers who allowed them to express that belief. You saw the same thing with Wales and Scotland. And other teams in this tournament.

England have plenty of talent, the problem isn’t the players per-se. Southgate needs to step up as manager and release their potential; that’s his job and I’ll be looking to him tomorrow.

They have to put the ball in the net.
England fielded impressive teams in the 80's.
Unfortunately, they ran into someone like Maradona (and the hand of God).

Loving the Denmark result. Love to see Russia destroyed. I was in Marseilles in 2016, but thankfully at the opposite end of the ground. If the English had behaved like the Russians did it would be ten year bans. Russia kept the World Cup two years later. FIFA are easily bought. 4.1. Love it. Pack your bags Russia.

We have plenty of talent coming through. Probably too young for this tournament, but there is quality produced by the youth systems at the major clubs with young English players training and playing with the best in the world in the Premier League.

Usually we expect to win it. Now we expect to be crap. Where is the middle ground?? Maybe not this tournament, but we have good players coming through.

(As you say too many to remember from the 90s but I'm adding Platt to your list.)

And remove Gazza, he played for Rangers ffs. Remember that great England side from the 94 world cup, Ian Wright, what a player. Tony Adams, couldn't jump at corners in case he spilled his vodka.

So I just looked at the draw and this talk of finishing second in the group and getting a better draw is a load of old horse crap, actually finishing top is better, marginally.

There were loads of brilliant goalkeeping moments in the Switz v Turkey game.
