Haha, I looked this up on YouTube just before the game; profound silliness, English eccentricity maybe.

There’s even a hockey meme for Very Rusty. Perfect.

So we have to find a player only from recent times who is world class but wasn't at their best while playing in Scotland, but played in Scotland. Forgotten exactly what this proves so I'll focus on three clean sheets, top of a group that included the world cup finalists and a home tie in the round of 16.

No, I think WAS at their best when in Scotland. It's why your trio didn't count.

I was going to suggest Archie Gemmill. Scored at least one half decent goal.

England 'just ' need things to click. The Czech's have become a half decent team recently, they held Belgium to a draw.

If we have another gear, we have a week to find it. I am hoping for a 'Holland 96' performance next Tuesday

Slovakia is better
than Engerland or whatever.
If we beat Spain today,
then tuck your dreams away.

Indeed. Next level opponents will score and we don’t look likely to.

Amazing how a group can be galvanized by getting to the knock out stages of a tournament. I think we are still finding our team. Sometimes tournaments can be more about individuals that make things happen. International football can never be at the level of top club football where you select quality from all around the world for spectacular one and two touch football. Apart from the odd historic Spanish and Brazilian teams who reached that level, you can go a long way with individuals who win free kicks and pens and make runs that make things happen, particularly if they are playing in front of a well organised defence that keep clean sheets. I think we have those qualities. Grealish and Saka are good tournament players. They would be spending too long on the ball for top clubs, but great for the Euros.

Amazing how many players shone in tournaments without lighting fires in club football, Schillaci, Diouf etc.

2 goals in 3 games, great team that. Long balls free kicks and corners, 9 man defense. Hopefully they concede early in the last 16, get through it playing good attacking football and I’ll be the first to say well done but I doubt it’s going to happen, Holland 96 is a long time ago.

Even Italia 90, didn’t they beat Cameron on pens? Cameron. The great English teams not so great after all.

2002 was the year, England Germany final had seaman not conceded that goal against Brazil possibly and Germany weren’t great. That was the best England team I can remember.

So who do the engerland fans want, France Portugal or zee Germans?

Wouldn’t mind seeing ronaldo winking again but that would mean them beating France which I can’t see. A draw in that game and a Germany win and you’re playing France, a win for France and Germany and it’s zee Germans and if Hungary win, a french win sets up a last 16 tie with Hungary.

Please let it be Hungary, getting dumped out by them will be more embarrassing than Iceland 4 years ago, funny how that’s forgotten about after a sideways passing 1-0 win against Croatia.

Delighted you appreciated the 2002 England world cup squad.

In the group stages they only scored two goals. πŸ€”

They drew two and won one progressing second in the group because they failed to keep a clean sheet against Sweden. Otherwise their results would have been identical to this one. πŸ€”

They got stronger as the competition progressed so perhaps you didn't appreciate them at this stage either. πŸ€”

Of course in 2002 the opposition that we did less well against in the group stages weren't world cup finalists from the previous tournament. πŸ€”
