While we await the confrontation with Germany…

I see that UEFA has dropped the “away goals” rule.
A good move I would say.
Means more extra time will be played. UEFA have been criticised historically for putting the needs of their competitions ahead of the demand on players over the season so this could be viewed as more of the same.

More likely by those who want to reduce injuries to players, but I can see how calling people short-sighted and petty will constitute a strong and intelligent line of argument (on a playground). 😁

Hockey Playoffs:

Montreal Canadians 3 Vegas Golden Knights 2 in overtime their 3rd of the series.

Montreal wins series 4-2 in 6 games. I was sure that one would go 7!

It was a hard fought contest with the Golden Knights having the play all over the Canadians a lot of the time but with "Carey Price" in nets gave them the chance they needed and they put the puck in the net on their chances. I think it would be safe to say without him Montreal would have been out in the first round. (Sometimes one man can make the difference)

Now they will be going on to play the winner of the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lighting winners who are going to 7th game which I believe goes tonight.

This will be the Montreal Canadian's first appearance playing for the Stanley cup since 1993 when they won the cup. Majority of that Team is now in the Hockey Hall Of Fame. Patrick Roy was the Goalie. Many Hab fans will remember that one.

Who ever they play will be tough, I didn't expect them to get this far! Stees should be happy about this one.

Away goals makes it more exciting, back to the old boring first leg away performance.

So playing and extra 15 minutes each way is a problem for world-class athletes, especially when they are subbed on? And further when juxtaposed with the boring tactical buss-parking which goes on under the current system. But perhaps you have a different view?

Btw no one here is accusing anyone else here of being petty and small minded.

Away goals was brought in to make in more interesting, to reward attacking play away from home, remove it and there’s no benefit to attack in the first leg when away. Defend, get a boring 0-0 and win 1-0 at home, with away goals a team trying that can be undone by an equaliser and knocked out of the tournament with a home 1-1, remove the away goals and there’s less risk on the team playing at home second and too much of a benefit.

Yeah I get why it was brought in and it worked for a while, but having to play on the day, in the game to win, has to be a better way.

With any goals you get more teams having to play for a win, last 5 minutes of a game which is 1-1 after a 0-0 in the first game, going to extra time as it stands now, are both teams going to be too scared to concede they settle for the draw and extra time? I think so, with away goals it would be a very entertaining end of the game with a team needing a goal.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Love European nights at Anfield.

Totally agree that extra time is rarely ever a good watch. Players are too spent to risk overcommitting forward and usually take no risks while waiting for pens. Dull as dishwater. Pens at 90 mins would be a different alternative to away goals, but away goals work for me.

Over the years the “away goals” rule has encouraged teams for become more tactical and take less risks in home fixtures. This has resulted teams not performing at their best in terms of attacking play and resorting to adopting an over-cautious stance when playing at home and resulting in games which are played out as exercises in defence rather than attack. From a fans perspective the game can become more like a game of chess rather than a game of football.

The notion that we should sacrifice exciting attacking gameplay for a potential reduction in players getting cramp in extra time is an anathema to fans who want to see teams go at it and try to win in normal time rather than rely on the 1-1 on always goals to get them through.

Liverpool's games in the knock out stages.

Last season average of 2 goals per game, majority scored in first legs.
Season before average of 3 goals per game.
Season before (strategy that won the competition) average of over 3 goals per game in knock out stages.

Not everybody looks at football though the eyes of Liverpool fans.
