@drewnogal saidHats off to you for your 'obsession', which sounds more like a good habit. We (myself and she who is most beloved) have a small gymnasium, so 30 - 40 minutes on a cross - trainer does the trick, and we aim for every day, but in reality it's 3 or 4 times a week. We live in the tropics so the room has to be cooled down first to stop us melting, then there's the fifteen minute psyche - up time and the shower and cool down afterwards, so it's more like an hour and a half all told, and it's easy to find reasons not to do it...It's one of those things which is a bind to get around to but you feel so much better afterwards.
Has anyone here ever experienced this? I have one that somewhat rules my life, it takes about an hour a day. An hour isn’t long but along with everything else I do including running a home for 3, exercising a border collie rescue dog, keeping 2 gardens, one a permaculture type vegetable garden, cooking everything from scratch .... well, it’s hard to get to bed before midnight.
Perhaps exercise is low on the list for serious chess players?
By the by and since you mention it I'm not a serious chess player, most of my brain power such as it is is channeled into writing, currently radio shows, you know, so the brain gets a good work - out most days, but the body doesn't do quite so well on a daily basis. In my case a bit more exercise obsession wouldn't be a bad thing....
@indonesia-phil saidMust be great having a home gym which you obviously need in your climate. I just leap about trying not to hit the lights and roll around the floor. My sons don’t bat an eyelid as I’ve done it since they were babies. Having a spare sitting room and TV helps.

@drewnogal saidwe use the spare bedroom that we first used as a dinning room, we have stuck the table in the small conservitory(not that it ever gets used, far to hot) we have the 2 machines a reebock stepper that I bought at a boot sale plus a set of weights that we have had for years, because my right knee is buggered I strap it up and cant do squats can manage the seat stand but my knee knows about it after 10 reps.

@trev33 saidI try for 10 hrs bed by 10pm up by 9am our lass brings me a cuppa around 8am god I love that woman.
I have an obsession with getting 8-9 hours sleep, during this sleep I dream of doing all sorts of exercises and getting fit and toned but unfortunately it never seems to produce any real results.
@trev33 saidPretty funny

LOL@ trev33, you'd have to do more than dream about it to produce results! π

@badradger saidIs it dark at 10pm at the moment there? Anytime I go to bed before about 11 this time of year my brain just won’t have it... but I have no issues sleeping until about midday if I don’t need to go anywhere π€·π»βοΈ

@drewnogal
I am the same way. I don't consider it an obsession just a good habit to have. During covid and having recently moved to a new city, I was unable to join a gym. We made some adjustments and bought a Sole elliptical machine and set up a workout room. Now I am back on track and get about an hour a day (most days). I find that after missing about 2 days the guilt starts to set in. At 28 I smoked a pack a day and was significantly over weight. One spring day that year I just decided to stop all that and start working out. I've been doing it every since and at 62 I do believe it has improved my life in a number of ways. Its not an obsession. Its just the knowledge that you are doing something right and you should hang onto that.

@badradger saidSure, get up later and then you’re having brunch, best meal of the day. I love this time of year, stay up until 4am and watch it turn into daytime, not a morning person so can’t appreciate it in winter getting light at 8am.

@relentless-red saidOn reflection it’s more a case of cramming too much in rather being obsessed with exercise as my routine hasn’t changed for a while. I do keep a record of the date and how many I get done each day mind which helps.
I think the use of language to describe it is interesting. One person's good habits is another persons obsession. I would guess top athletes and sports people will often be pretty compulsive. I have good habits for running until I get an injury. Once I've lost the habit it sometimes takes me a while to get it established again.
I like it better when it is so much a ...[text shortened]... etter when I'm not controlling it maybe??
Do you control your good habits or do they control you?
@drewnogal saidI Keep a food,excersise, Blood pressure & blood sugar diary have done for 3 years,I dont count cals but I do carbs,a basic days food B/F 2 eggs 1 wholemeal toast+ fruit, Lunch a bio yoghurt or 2 tea/dinner Stir fry or fish +fruit/ check my BP after work out/blood sugar twice a day 2 hr +after meal a good week for me would be a full week of blood sugar under 7mmols under 6 would be brilliant.
