If you are on the either line you are head to head regardless, if you are tackling through the line the running back will have his head down low so you can crack it, if you tackle in the chest and time your lift and drive you crack them... anyway, its not spearing if you put your arms out as well, its hard to make a flying tackle at rib shoulder level without a bit of head in there for fun 😉
I only ever got called for spearing once, at the level I played the refs just never called it.
We used to judge a game on how much of the opposions paint we had on our helmets as the end of the game!

I watched a game of American Football live once when two teams came over to England to play an exhibition game in London many years ago. as a spectacle I didn't rate it at all.
