Did you miss the post suggesting that the accused be clearly charged with specific "crimes", giving them - then - the ability to defend themselves? 🙄
If you feel someone is bullying report it to the mods. Then they, for once, can act as a mod really should (instead of banning words)!

So in your moral fight against racism and homosexuality, you decided the best way to combat it would be to act as bigoted as possible? 😕

😲 However, it may prove to have been an excellent exercise in "outing" the problems...
Perhaps some posters will contribute fearlessly, knowing that BT&T's will be pegged and mocked appropriately? 😛 We'll see...

Just because the mods are tossers, doesn't mean you should become a vigilante.
Bullying the bully will not be productive and will only serve to make you one yourself.

Ok, please proceed with your definition of a bully then.
Oops... sorry I missed this post yesterday, Arby... I was hurrying off to work
This definition is actually of "workplace bullying" but I've tweaked it accordingly:
"Persistent intimidation or harassment in the Forums which demoralizes and humiliates a person or group. There are no universally agreed definitions of what constitutes Forum bullying, as there are many kinds of bullying behaviors or tactics. As a general guideline to distinguish between Forum bullying and legitimate criticism, comments should follow the principles for offering feedback: it should be properly conducted, nonpersonal, and constructive, and should not be abusive, aiming to help people to improve their behavior or performance rather than cause them anxiety or distress."
To that I, personally, would add a stress on relentless persistence and reliance on cheap personal and often quite juvenile insults intended to intimidate other Forum posters into acquiensence or silence.

It's only the first step. The next step is to bully the bully's bully. And then... well, you get the gist.
ETYMOLOGY: Possibly from Middle Dutch boele, sweetheart, probably alteration of broeder, brother. 😛

Who do you think is bullying whom? 😕
As would a search through your own posts. Although I'm sure you'd justify those as inter-clan banter.

However...
I may have some idea of who you're talking about. That doesn't mean we have the same definition of "bully". It just means that I think I understand yours.
These people who (I believe) you're talking about are long-time paying customers of this site who contribute actively to these forums. If it weren't for people like them, I (and many others) wouldn't find these forums so entertaining. This site is, after all, a business. As a business owner, wouldn't that be desirable?
Sure, some people may get scared off or intimidated, but then again, you can't please everyone. A certain number of people are going to find them entertaining and a certain number will not. My guess is that the people who will find them entertaining or insightful are those who are more inclined to become regular quality contributors.
In my personal opinion, the "bullies" of the site often do a lot more to keep people in line than the mods. If someone spams the forum or continually posts idiotic threads, a bully will have no problem calling them out. This tends to raise the quality of the content around here (something which, I'm sure you'll agree, we could use a lot more of).
If someone posts a stupid question or a boring new thread, what am I supposed to do? Give them a big cyber-hug and let them know I accept them? Sorry, but the real world doesn't work that way, and neither should a public forum. It's not my job to babysit the idiots of the world.
No, I don't think anyone should intentionally hurt someone's feelings. Ask yourself this. If a newcomer enters the forum and creates a genuinely good new thread, isn't it likely that people will respond in a polite and intelligent manner? I think so. I know I'd try to.
Lastly, I've seen some pretty hilarious stuff in these forums over the past few years. Most of it wasn't particularly mean or hurtful, but it was put forth by these so-called bullies of yours. Honestly, if it wasn't for people like them, this would be just another chess site and I'd be just as happy taking my business elsewhere.
Be honest with yourself. The real reason you come back to this site probably isn't your great love of chess. It's the sense of community (corny as that sounds). In a real community, there are all sorts of personalities...bullies, comedians, dorks, idiots...etc. Why should this be any different? Perhaps that's what makes it so "real".
P.S. The mods have a thankless VOLUNTEER job. When was the last time you volunteered for something (aside from a liver transplant list)? [/bullying] 😉 If you want to make a difference, go ahead and volunteer your services. Nobody's stopping you.
