The Big Lebowski is a good film, I'd even say a great film. It's chock full of phrases that became memes, especially in America, like "The Dude Abides."
I understand how a European might not get the humor, as it comes from a distinctly American slacker vibe. The narration by Sam Elliott seems almost out of place, because I can't see a cowboy understanding the slacker vi ...[text shortened]... ot like the Dude, but I met plenty of them in college, and man, Bridges is spot on in his portrayal.
I would add some more with serious cult potential:
Dude, Where's My Car ("I will give you ultimate pleasure." )
Earth Girls Are Easy (Geena Davis, Jim Carrey in an early role)
Truman Show (Jim Carrey again)
Wayne's World (in which Garth says: "At first new underwear is scratchy, but later it becomes part of you." )

@torunn saidThat's how I prefer to watch movies, if there's a choice. But of course sometimes reading the subtitles is a distraction from the visuals and I have to rewind to really appreciate the scene.
In Sweden we never use dubbing to translate films, only subtitles. The films are genuine, the actors and voices real and it helps us appreciate new languages.

@suzianne saidBTW, speaking of European humor, I would recommend “Late Bloomers.” A Swiss comedy. Yes, I know, the Swiss are famous for pocket knives and chocolate, not comedy. But this film has a very quaint charm about it. It’s about a very straightlaced village, ultra conservative, in which a group of little old ladies decide to open up a mail order lingerie shop. Well, the rest of the village gets into a tizzy. I don’t know how well it translates, but in the original it is all done in local dialect, which in itself is pretty funny. I suppose it would be comparable to some little old ladies in back country Kentucky trying to do the same sort of thing, all done in twangy local dialect.

@torunn saidSomething I have come to appreciate is the cat-complaining intonation in some bits of dialogue in Korean and Japanese movies, which would be completely lost with overdubbing. And also the concise expressiveness of the Japanese "mm".
