Similarly, "marked" is pronounced "markt" (one syllable), but "markedly" is pronounced "mark-ed-ly", three. Not easy for a non-native speaker.

@moonbus saidThere is a rule somewhere. 🙂 We non-native speakers rely heavily on grammatical rules, and memory. 🙂 In this case I would guess it has to do with pronunciation. You choose the easiest way.
"Drenched" is pronounced "drencht", one syllable.
Similarly, "marked" is pronounced "markt" (one syllable), but "markedly" is pronounced "mark-ed-ly", three. Not easy for a non-native speaker.
