from our viewpoint as citizens, it is quite true that you are a foreigner.
I am a foreigner to Austrians, Poles, Germans, Russians, British, Greeks, Macedonians, French, Australians, Chinese, Japanese, Cubanos, Mexicans, Ethiopians, Canadians, Scandinavians, Lithuanians, Eskimos
Oh. And the swiss.

from what i have seen, the uk is usually who doesn't like the u.s. and they come up with stereotypes but one stereotype that is true is that most americans are fat. although, europeans are drunks, dont age well, and they are also jealous of america, and copycats of america but claim they hate it so much, probably because they think we should be part of the uk but we wont that war so idk what to tell them. the bottom line is all countries claim to hate america in some way but all countries want to come to america for schooling and job opportunity which is hypocritical and so the conclusion i have come to is the u.s. is the best, most powerful country, that everyone hates and envies. maybe we have bad qualities and we make bad decisions, but we have bigger guns so it dont matter.

You make a great case for that. Everyone should be able to craft a sentence like this:
"from what i have seen, the uk is usually who doesn't like the u.s. and they come up with stereotypes but one stereotype that is true is that most americans are fat. although, europeans are drunks, dont age well, and they are also jealous of america, and copycats of america but claim they hate it so much, probably because they think we should be part of the uk but we wont that war so idk what to tell them."

i agree. i'm often appalled by the antiamericanism in this country.
but one stereotype that is true is that most americans are fat.
i don't think obesity is much more prevalent in the us than in the uk. it varies geographically a lot in both - not much of a problem in nyc or south california or london, big problem in iowa and glasgow...
although, europeans are drunks,
true enough
dont age well
hm, not sure about that. hadn't heard it before.
and they are also jealous of america, and copycats of america but claim they hate it so much, probably because they think we should be part of the uk but we wont that war so idk what to tell them.
dude that's gibberish
the bottom line is all countries claim to hate america in some way
sad but mostly true
but all countries want to come to america for schooling
you've chosen a bad day to make that claim. even under normal circumstances i don't know that it's true particularly - if you mean college a lot of people want to come here too; if you mean (high) school, i think a lot more people want to come here, and to the scandinavian countries.
and job opportunity
yes, but a lot of people come here for that too
which is hypocritical and so the conclusion i have come to is the u.s. is the best, most powerful country, that everyone hates and envies. maybe we have bad qualities and we make bad decisions, but we have bigger guns so it dont matter.
i can't tell if you turn sarcastic at that point or not. i kinda hope so...

as for the big guns, you're envied for them like the nazi germany was. nobody likes the lunatic with the big red button, holding the world hostage for 'national interests'.
americans have perfected the pizza though. and are very polite & optimistic. but the shark-eat-shark stuff is really killing you.

I'm noticing more and more stereotypes about Americans as I meet more foriegners, esp. from Europeans. How are we yanks viewed?
I've seen alot of Fat, impolite, self centered, ignorant to others...
The thing I hate the most is that the wealthiest 3 people in America are individually richer than the 48 poorest nations ...combined😠ðŸ˜
I have not really seen positive opinions though :'(
Negative - most of the negatives like "obese, lazy, rude, etc." can be discounted, as I've found them pretty much everywhere I've lived - you should see some of the chunky monkies on the dole (welfare) shooting their poorly educated mouths off in some of the pubs here in Dublin for example. However, the American "patriotism" is, at this point, bordering on the same nationalistic spirit than spawned Hitler's government. You all may want to take a close look at how many of your freedoms are being infringed by the Homeland Security Act for example...
Positive - Americans have a very good understanding of customer service (so this would fall into the polite category,) whereas here in Ireland you pretty much take the service you are given and are darned glad for it (although this is starting to change fairly rapidly.) Americans don't put up with a whole lot of sh** in terms of crime - I lived in AZ for most of the 13 years and I'll tell you - you do not want to end up in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's tent city wearing pink underwear. In Ireland, there is a recent case of a man who was convicted of breaking into a woman's house, assaulting her, and being caught still lying in her bed the next morning and he was given a three year suspended sentence...
In the end, it comes down to what you believe, who you believe, and where you are most comfortable expressing that. I no longer felt comfortable in the States - the nationalistic propaganda was getting on my ass, people were telling me I couldn't express myself for fear of getting into trouble, and the Bill of Rights was beginning to look a little battered...
But as I said, this is only my opinion, and I mean no offense by it.
edit - for some reason I was not able to post this the first time, so number of things have been toned down even though they were not meant as offensive - it really makes me wonder how sasquatch managed to sneak the old eff word in a few days ago...
Originally posted by st00p1dfac3I can't speak for all Americans, but I just don't see that patriotic spirit. Most of the people I know, can't stand our President (and most of our current leaders). I think there's a pretty large percentage of us that find our government and their decision-making process quite embarrassing.
However, the American "patriotism" is, at this point, bordering on the same nationalistic spirit than spawned Hitler's government.
I don't think you can effectively stereotype Americans. Our country is pretty large (geographically) with lots of little subcultures within its borders. New Yorkers are very different from Californians, who are very different from Texans...etc. If you live in one area that's filled with overweight, flag waving, gun-toting "patriots", you can easily find another that's filled with leftist, flag-burning, pacifist hippies.
Personally, I blame the media for most of the prevalent stereotypes. No country has a monopoly on stupid.
Originally posted by rbmorrisI've always found it hilarious that all the presidents of u.s. in the movies & tv-series' are invariably greatly concerned about the environment, human rights, and all that 'leftist flag-burning hippie stuff'. in fact, there's usually even a background plot about their flag-burning days as young leftish radicals.
Personally, I blame the media for most of the prevalent stereotypes.
My two cents: In general, this has been a fair assessment -- a dose of justifiable criticism and an equal measure of praise. Some Americans will always be obnoxious, but I hope and trust that they will continue to be a distinct minority. If you haven't been here, come and visit -- you'll be pleasantly surprised. As for politics, in spite of what some of you believe, right-wing influence is not widespread and actually seems to be on the wane. We look forward to the post-Bush era. By the way, I live in Rhode Island, not Texas, I'm not fat and I don't own a gun.
