I know it's been discussed here before but there are new people here since we did this.

I used to work at a restaurant. One of the truck drivers that delivered to my work played chess. He had heard my name mentioned by other players in his home town. He was surprised that I was the same guy his friends knew.
We met on Yahoo and pogo for some games. He asked me about correspondence chess. My other friend was, still is, an active USCF postal player, so I was familiar with such games but had never tried it.
He emailed a link to RHP.
He ended up not liking correspondence chess, asked me about playing at the sister site uchess.
I loved that site, got hooked. That site was eventually shut down though.

@Gambre
My grandson joined a chess club in Gothenburg when he was very young and I accompanied him there on Tuesdays to make sure he had something to eat. When after a couple years he found this site, he wanted me to try it and I did. And then, after a while he left RHP but I stayed. That was my own first encounter with chess.

Probably just from a web search.

Chess dot com introduced me to the idea of correspondence-style time controls for online chess, but the tournaments there took forever to get started, so I looked for another site for CC-style tournaments.

I just discovered, one of my old friends I met here is still active playing.

I first joined in 2007 and I enjoyed learning chess, and meeting very nice people and the forums were entertaining and educational for me.

My best friend who taught me how the pieces moved and showed me some openings back in 1993 and defences which I still use to-day introduced me to the site back in 2006. He liked the site because of the Clans, clubs, and tournaments. It was shortly after that in 2008 I took your spot in Metallica when you had to leave. At that time you were hundreds of points above my rating. You were not one of those players who could be replaced by anyone. I just filled your spot so to speak. Didn't do to bad in the 13 years I was there winning around 1600 plus games for the clan.

I can't remember how I found this site 16 or 17 years ago.

Probably I mistyped porn and typed pawn by mistake 🤔

I played at itsyourturn.com until they eliminated the forums and further limited the site, so I left and found Stan's NetChess (which recently closed). Played there for a while but their interface was not that good so I looked for another site and found Caissa's Web. They had a cool java game interface but it was only live chess. I started looking for correspondence chess online and finally found this site. Back then there were not many women on the site, so the forums were tricky to navigate without people either coming onto you or telling you that you were crap at chess. I guess I felt challenged enough to stick around, and I am still here.

I think I was referred to RHP from a group at Friends Reunited.

First person I met here on the forums was @Trev33 who immediately trolled me.

Nice background, thank for sharing.
The online world was so different pre Facebook era.
