If the Canaries count as a country my number goes up still.

Well it has to count as something. If i had been to the Spanish mainland also, i would not've counted it.

If you have lived your entire life in the USA, you have had a chance to be exposed to the cultural influences of more countries than anyone who has lived their entire life in any other one country.

I'd count Hong Kong as a different country...

Also, was your stopover between fights when you had checked in or did you have to wait to check in? Had an overnight in Schiphol as well but it was between flights and had already checked in, airport was totally dead until about 5am, there most to houses nearby as they don;t fly from 10pm to 6am (ish). Have never been in an airport so quiet.

Only in a select few number of cities though. Heard New York has more languages spoken than any other city in the world, around 80 I think.

I'm not much of a traveler. I haven't been anywhere new in many years. When I graduated University I did my share of travels but always found coming home to be the best part. I guess that's the advantage of living in such a great city/country/continent. I have more of an urge to visit the East Coast of Canada/US then to travel afar. However, next time I travel with the family, we will be going to one of those lazy kid-friendly all-inclusives. I do look forward to that.

What happened in Sri Lanka? I can't say I ever had any trouble in any country I worked in. Did have one time in Thailand up country on a motorcycle trip with my gf, was set upon by a Thai gang slamming chains against the side of their car. Fortunately my bike was a lot faster than their car and we got far enough ahead that we found a little shack and hid out in back and saw them zoom by, unaware we were watching them quickly disappear down the road. That was near Chiang Mai, a really beautiful part of Thailand.

I was working on microwave communications systems at the time at NKP air force base as a civilian.

The thing about Chiang Mai was the King's palace was there and the USAF wanted to put up a communications antenna on a local hill but there was this law that you could not have any structure higher altitude than the King's palace so they had to build one about ten times bigger on ground level to pass local laws. It was about the size of a football field on endπŸ™‚

My gf went to Ta Kek in Laos and was robbed by a taxi driver, but he didn't get much, she had this backpack loaded with books and at the bottom a nice camera but all he saw was the books so she got off pretty lightly.

I went to Laos also, which was supposedly forbidden to Americans. I didn't let that stop me either, so I went to a border guard on the Thai side, explained my desire to go to Laos, he said, ok, give me 5 dollars, which I did.

He then took off his epaulates (now he was a civilianπŸ™‚ and my passport, we took a little power boat across the Mekong and met a guard over there, a friend of his, gave him a couple of dollars, the guard kept my passport, I went in to Ta Kek, did the sights for about 6 hours, had a ball, came back and the guard was still there, gave me my passport, took me back across the Mekong and back home at NKP. It was a great day! I was kind of surprised both guards were on the up and up, both very friendly!
