english counties are now meaningless. There is no gap between them, they are homogeneous. And besides there are more english people in Afghanistan than there are in Rutland. Does that make Afghanistan an english county?

why should there be a separate yorkshire identity ? If I am born there do I have such an identity? How about if I die there or was only conceived there (on the moors one night when the last german bomber crashed there and my mother ovulated with the excitement of it all), identity-wise? If I had a yorkshire identity I would probably, you are right by insinuation, be proud of it. But I am more proud to be british and to be a subject of the Queen. So why should having a yorkshire identity make my 'higher feelings of allegiance to the british queen' weaken this.

that's excellent, i like these things. i got 41, and feel pretty silly about the four i missed. so did slightly better than i did on US states - missed six of them (even sillier).

agreed, rene is talking out of his chapeau. the english counties differ from each other at least as much as the american states, despite the enormous difference in geographical scale.

none of this makes any sense. it's entirely up to you what you're proud of or how you identify yourself.
