I found it absolutely appalling and mean-spirited that neither you, nor FMF, nor divegeester wished her well

I didn't believe for one moment that she was leaving. And I was right.
But she did leave and for quite a while

How many shillings were there in a guinea in Great Britain before it was replaced by the pound in 1816?

How many guns are fired to salute the head of state - the king - in the UK, and also the President of the USA?

Sovereign, not pound. The pound was always 20 shillings. In 1816, though, the largest coin of the realm, the gold guinea at a pound and a shilling, was abolished, and replaced by the silver sovereign at a pound and nought.

I gather, but am not certain, that up to then the pound had mostly been a unit of account and most trade was done with shillings or notes promissory; there weren't many pound coins, historically. And guineas, even then, were used for Upper Class Dealings.
Since 1816, it's thotherwayround: the pound is real - the sovereign is just called the pound coin - and we still reckon in that unit; but shillings are out, and the guinea is now a fictional unit of account worth one and fivepence.

The Royal mint still makes Sovereign coins. Their value is closely correlated to the gold price. A new one costs about £410 at the moment.
