oh I don't know... I know how to pronounce the ö, and I think the ø is pronounced the same way. I have no idea, however, of how to explain the sound to somebody who doesn't speak German... I don't think there's an english equivalent. But maybe there's a single word where the pronounciation comes close... Nordlys, any ideas?

Æ is easier, it sounds very much like the "a" in "bad". And å sounds like the German o, which sounds like the English o if it's short, while the long Norwegian å / German o is harder to explain again. I'd say it's about the sound you end with when you say a long English "o".
