Why? He replied to a post which was quite clearly a joke, and most likely a joke by someone not Christian. He didn't address Christians, he was joking around with someone who was likely to share his disbeliefs. You said yourself that you would be more offended if someone says "Your religion is crap" (or however exactly it went) than if someone states es against my own beliefs, I would feel insulted all the time. Doesn't sound much fun.
Yes, someone said "What's the bible?" as a joke. I got that part. He chose to take the opportunity to state his beliefs, true, but he used language that was designed to inflame, as I've seen here in other forums before. I take extreme exception to the idea that by believing in God and the Bible, that I have been brainwashed. He stated his belief about my religion, but he also said I was brainwashed, so he *was* addressing me. If someone says "there are millions of those black bastards in the world" and I was black, I would take personal offense also, even though he was not speaking to me. This is another point I was *trying* to bring up, that denigrating a group that someone belongs to also denigrates that person and every member of that group personally.
And there's a big difference between calling someone a "mental couch potato" and saying they've been brainwashed by a book that they hold sacred and is a cornerstone of their religion.
Same reason you wouldn't be offended if someone called you a "[N-word]"... you're not black. (Yes, I used the word and it was rejected as "offensive", so I had to edit.) You don't *have* a religion to be insulted over. That's why you don't get it. That's basically what I told Starrman, too. Comparing a religion to no religion is apples and oranges.
I'd get into the concept more deeply, but I'm getting tired, and frankly, you don't care.
Edit: getting rid of the inappropriate and unintentional smiley

Anyway, Arrakis, let me point out - just to get the facts straight - that my 'Read The Bible' thread was not meant as an invitation or an encouragement, at least in my opinion, to actually read that book.

How accurate was I?

Try substituting the words "belief system" for "religion" and you'll have your answers.
If I'd meant "belief system", I'd have said "belief system". I said religion because I meant religion.
I might "believe" it'll rain tomorrow, but that's not a measure of who I am, and it is not a fundamental part of me.

Now that we've dealt with Christianity in the previous 217 posts, can we perhaps change focus towards Islam and pour another 200 posts in to get this thread going ?

Except instead of chess insults there are religion insults - which sounds even more lame somehow.

Is it no wonder that there are so many wars? So much hatred? When people are so insecure about their beliefs that they feel the need to project HATE to those that might dispute it? Is this all in the defense of their God? Do they seriously think that this is what their God wants?
Mankind is doomed.
