Traditionally, that's been the way with Italians - I've known a few and they wait for marriage.
when I was young I thought it was ridiculoius. now that I'm older I think it's just good, keeping the family together. something we've lost around here within only two generations of urbanisation.
but they don't wait to breed illegitmate children....waiting for marriage without sexual abstention is just hyprocrisy and nothing to be lauded.
"Sacrificed for Honor" offers a fascinating look at a grim topic--the large-scale abandonment of new-borns in nineteenth-century Italy. Few readers might guess that illegitimacy and abandonment were common in Italy.
( you can fool most of the people most all the time but it is hard to fool reinfeld )
There was a case a while back about a judge who decided a woman didn't have to testify because it would violate her honor to have people find out she was having an affair...something like that.
It really made me think about how different the American and Italian (and most of the surrounding region it seems) ideas of "honor" are. Honor to me is not lying, not cheating, etc, - it's not about reputation but morality to me.
EDIT - Here it is:

Salaries in Italy are quite low by European standards, I hear.
