I'm not a religious fanatic, nor a debater... Are you so oblivious to your surroundings that you don't know that? Stop wasting my time.

I think Christians know they can't do anything on their own and so I would rather believe in Jesus and possibly be wrong. Evolution=no hope.

Evolution = no hope? What about a religion that fosters irresponsible procreation and the pillaging of the world's natural resources, based on the expectation that when everything falls to pieces, Big Daddy from the sky will show up and put everything right?

Evolution demands _responsibility_. This may be the only planet in the galaxy habitable at this point in time, and it's up to us to see to it that it remains so. (Of course, in the true sense of evolutionary thought, nature doesn't care about the human race. If we destroy the place, enough life-forms will survive to repopulate the planet. What's sad is that _intelligent life_ might not reoccur. Intelligence is not necessarily a driving force behind evolutionary success; all that matters is success in survival.)

It's said that everyone wants to get to Heaven, but no one wants to die. This is because, in their innermost of innermosts, most people realize that religion is, after all, a fairy tale. This is also why most people get so angry when this is pointed out to them.

I've also heard the old saw, "There are no atheists in foxholes." And I reply, "Of course. You need believers to wage war." How many people would take up arms for some tinhorn dictator if they believed that this life was all there was? How much more serious would the crime of murder be if the victim never went "to a better place?"

Think about it.

Re wars and environmental destruction: pretty well ANY belief system can be used and abused if someone really puts their mind to it. You think atheists aren't capable of raping the earth and not giving a pig's ear about the next generation?

I'd also like to point out that:

(a) There's no guarantee whatsoever that all the right-wingers you speak of are actually going to heaven

(b) The quality of one's behaviour here on earth is NOT the criteria for getting to heaven anyway. So there may well be some fairly obnoxious people up there.

Are you referring to Islam?

Evolution demands _responsibility_.

Given the abysmal job we are doing, do you conclude that evolution is an invalid theory?

I think science could prove that rational thought is subject to entropy...

>> No. I'm an equal-opportunity agnostic. I think, for example, that the Catholic church considers Latin America its own private Catholic baby factory.

>> Of course not. Evolution only implies that the fittest survive. It doesn't give a rat's ass whether humans do or not.

I think science could prove that rational thought is subject to entropy...

>> Perhaps. To steal a line I saw somewhere, "I'm going sane in a mad, mad world."
