Ahhh. But if they did play, you could argue that they'd be very good.
can one argue that a genius who is taught how to move the pieces will be able to defeat William John Barrow (an autistic 19 year old who has won numerous tournaments) no. chess comes from practice and study. intelligence will only assist in the slight aptitude to recognize geometric patterns.

no, not necessarily

EDIT: or at least learning chess

I said we are smarter on average than the everyday person...you would lose a lot of credibility if you called any of those people an everyday person...plus I was kidding in that last post.
2.) I am not boasting, but standardized test scores indicate that I am very intelligent, but a thorough look at my chess games reveal that since I joined, my playing ability has not improved dramatically. only 300 points over the course of I think 3ish years.
Originally posted by rubberjaw30I meant that I was kidding when I said that "if they were smart they would play too" that was my post before last. I have always agreed that a high IQ isn't needed to be good at chess its just that chess attracts the people with higher than average IQs.

you are making completely general statements.

I suppose I could dig some up if I really wanted to but this topic isn't that important since we both agree that hard work is more important to becoming good at chess...the only thing we dissagree on is the intelligence of most chessplayers vs. intelligence of most average people. I don't really care that much. I know that my IQ is somewhere up there as I can pass all my AP classes without really doing much homework or even showing up every day and I play.
no, I'm trying to offer evidence to support my argument
all you've managed to say is "smart people are good at chess"
