As a kid I hated it.

In high school I barely passed it.

Now, in college, I get A's on calculus tests that I don't study for; from lectures I don't take notes on.

And yet I am still a D rated player on this site. What gives?

...

What do you think about math?

I think it should have an "s" at the end.

I think what you write to be improbable.

Math is about training as is language or chess. There are always some geniuses who see everyting with one glance, but the normal person has to study.

I always had fun with math to answer your question. starting in elementary school throughout university (though I only did the math necessary for chemistry plus two courses).

Good luck.

You're obviously an unrecognised genius who will never be fully appreciated in his/her (probably her) lifetime. Go live in a cave, like Pythagoras, and revolutionise the face of mathematics as we know it.

I was slightly above average with mathematics through middle school. I started to actually enjoy it in college.

Being good at mathematics doesn't mean that you will be good at chess, but both are based in logic and both can be enhanced with the right kind of creativity, so the basic building blocks are very similar.

But to get good at either one, quite simply you need to roll up your sleeves, apply yourself, and get to work if wish to excel in either subject.

I'm a science teacher and they had me teach a math class or two as well, though due to issues with what kind of credential I'm applying for, they had to take me out of the math classroom.

They teach children boring, uninspiring math. Algebra, calculus, geometry can pull you in like a black hole. They can be fascinating, but there's too much time being spent on stupid baby stuff.

My hypothesis for the math teacher - start with very simple algebra. Use variables early on. If the kid is learning addition, his homework should look like this:

n + 2 = 5

n = ____

Or even

2 + 3 = n

n = ____

In a sense childern do, asked about things instead of just numbers and given problems like sharing sweets. They need to get to grips with numbers first before they can start algebra. There's no use in confusing them now is there!
