Why do they compete separately? Is this the chess world saying men are smarter? Or men play chess better? I'm convinced women are just as smart as men. So why are women comparatively weaker? Is it simply the difference in the rating pools?
It's hard for me to understand why in this day and age such sexist segregation exists?

Because we are less, or fewer.

There are separate chess leagues for women but they are still allowed to compete with men.

There are times in a woman's life when she is torn between a career and private obligations. Can it be that women are less consistent in their progress, they have other considerations?

Good question!

When the Polgar sisters were at their peak, they competed successfully in men's events, and it's no secret the top female players of today could do the same.

I'm just guessing, but it may have something to do with prize money. If the top 10 male players competed in women's events, there wouldn't be much prize money left for the ladies.

I agree women are just as smart as men and in many cases smarter. This is just old school stuff. Once they couldn't even compete in tournaments. A fellow was telling me back when they first started the club which I believe is over 50 years ago the men all dressed in suits and it was considered a gentleman's game. A woman was never seen at a tournament back then, unless it was out side the playing area waiting for their Male friend or Husband.

They probably just want to play some games without getting hit on or started at.

It's more cultural than anything else. There are less women in chess for the same reason there are fewer women is sports, business, politics, etc. Sexism, oppression...the usual.

This is the obvious answer that seems to escape dudes here whenever the "why don't more women..." question comes up.

*In my opinion*,,

Men are more aggressive and will use chess (as an example) to dominate other people.
Women - aka the fair sex, are not so enthused.

Oh, and without proof, I do not believe that women are as smart as men in certain areas.

PS: My above is not a complete answer. There is something strong to be said for a male's
insatiable appetite to discover and explore, explore *anything*
