Everytime this topic is brought up there are huge arguments between the "resign so you don't waste the opponent's time" and the "It's your right to play to checkmate" camps of idiots.
My answer is indeed the right answer. Everyone chooses when that point is for them on a game by game basis. Judging someone else on their point of resignation is st ...[text shortened]... me the pleasure of checkmating him, since he thought I played well.
No problem there is there?
And to KK, I think you're right. Many players of lesser experience think that after playing a good game, it is the winner's right to checkmate his opponent and by resigning, you selfishly take this right away from them. I've heard similar thinking from many players. And those on the losing end also feel that having the winner berate them for not resigning implies that the winner has better things to do with their time than playing them, which fosters resentment at their arrogance.
I say just let people play their own game. If that means you must be bothered with the onus of actually having to checkmate them, then so be it. Berating lower level players because they dare to try for a comeback and force you to actually land the killing blow hardly fosters the brotherly feelings of goodwill that this game should engender in players of all skill levels toward their fellow chessplayers. Lower level players should be encouraged to play more, not beaten down and discouraged from playing more.
EDIT: Bah, I meant to put two quotes in my quote box, but together it seems they were too long and it squashed them both togather. ๐
I have been asked a few times to resign when in a hopeless posistion to save the opponents time.......the reasons why I dont are;
1)I never resign,I just dont do it
2)I can always learn something....even at this hopeless stage of the game
3)The opponent shouldn't of taken on so many games at once
4)The opponent should get a social life
5)It annoys them
6)Often get a stalemate...always worth a try
7)I paid my subscription...so going to get my moneys worth๐

I hate being pressured into resigning. I play to the death most of the time and if you don't like it...tough
Originally posted by T140I did suggest a resignation to you once, and you politely explained that you never resigned. Fair enough, and absolutely no reason for anyone to get annoyed. It just gave me extra practice in efficient checkmating ๐

Originally posted by wucky3I recently played a game where my opponent and I were down to only a few pawns each At move 42 he declared I should take the draw as it would only end in stalemate. I refused, saying that if it was going to end in stalemate he would have his draw anyway. I managed to push two pawns through and won convincingly.

Game 1334573
So for me, unless I think my cause is lost, there is always a point in continuing.
