He spent his early adult life feeling guilty about ~ and always forgiving himself for ~ what he'd just eaten, but he turned into a person who compensated for all this by being forever jolly and self-deprecating - armed with a set of funny little retorts for all the cruel jibes and put downs relentlessly pointed his way.
He must have been dreaming about climbing again from what she heard him mutter in his sleep but since the accident she knew he was best left in his happy world than brought into the day with her news so she sat back in her chair and watchingly waited for either ending and if it was that he awoke with sad remembering she'd be ready to comfort her son.
