We got a wedding present the other day, and to cut a long story short....it was a gift just for one of us. Is this normal for a person to give a wedding gift that is solely for the giver's friend?

Why should the "friend" have to adopt the new one as a friend also?

It is perfectly fine to give to "one" of them.

It was a GIFT. You know, free stuff given out of the generosity of the giver's heart?

Yes. That's what he means...it's only for one of them.

Could've been an invitation. Your wife utilises the "present", while the giver uses...

Why worry, you can always sell it on eBay.

I asked my wife, she said that should have been a shower gift and was VERY THOUGHTLESS.
