I liked Bus the best.. It is the kind of picture I would like to take more often. I love the feet under the chairs and that single leg interrupting the aisle.
Stormy Weather also did well for me it just looks so big, and I too can see a face in the clouds (about a third in from the left). Giant I liked too as the Pylon is made to look so dominating in the picture.
Chain Bridge is nice, although it is a little angled. I scored it down because of the Crane in the background. Worth another trip to Budapest to get this one once the building work is complete. 😉
With 'Max' I liked the picture but the black background took something away, I agree with Ddv it'd be nice to see this with something in the background. I didn't notice the chopped paw and on looking now wonder why if this is an issue to viewers, why is the chopped tail not? (it looks like that extends beyond the frame too)
I'm afraid I don't like portraits in general, so they didn't get any votes from me. That's just personal preference and not to say they are not nice pictures in their own right.
I hope to be able to contribute pictures to future rounds, I'd kinda drifted away from this comp lately.
Again apologies for breaking the rules about comments whilst voting in progress. I hope some can understand why I felt it necessary though.

Argh, I just wrote a long post with comments on some of the pictures, and then when I was almost done I clicked in the wrong place and closed the page. 😞 And it's late, and I am tired. So I won't rewrite it now. And I don't know if I'll have the time tomorrow or on Friday. So please bear with me. 😳
I'll also start a thread about the next round ("People" ) as soon as possible. You can already send pictures to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com

Anybody else want to post some feedback?

My votes:
1. Stormy Weather
This was the quintessential black and white shot. Moody, detailed, great lines, great textures, plenty to look at, excellent.
2. Gypsy girl
First glance, this looks like a great portrait. Closer inspection reveals a lot more of the subject than the simple shot implies. The dark look in her eyes, the emotive effect of the half-c0cked grin, the seriousness, the subtle undertone of character.
3. Copper Beech Leaves
This is a really great pic, I would've given it my number one vote but feel that the quality of the composition is slightly undercut by the b&w format.
4. Sky High
This is a pretty arbitrary shot, but I couldn't tear myself away from it. The innocence in the little girl's eyes, the expectation, maybe I'm projecting here. Beautiful.
5. The Lost City
I've a fetish for perspective shots, I've seen a lot better, but I liked the roughness of this one.
6. Pigeons
Fabulous picture. The lines are astounding. If I liked pigeons more I would've rated this one higher. I hate pigeons.
7. Dawn Cottage
Creepy, dark, black and white, standard, could've been sharper.
8. From the Crow's Nest
Nicely framed neat shot, nothing truly spectacular though.
My photos
Max:
This thoroughbred 2yr old Boerbul belongs to my father. He's really friendly but he's an absolutely vicious guard dog. I took about 30 photos of him, this one was done with a low level flash with the camera resting on the floor while he slept away. I don't feel that chopping off his paw detracted anything from the shot. The background was photoshopped away by someone more talented than myself. I thought it was distracting.
Here's the downsized original:

And here was my second choice:

Grey Day:
This was taken on the way to work and was part of a sequence of bus photos. It was just a lucky snap that turned out well. The guy in the photo is some idiot teenager who talks too loud and the other day he got on the bus with headphones and he was listening to hip-hop and doing menacing moves with his hands to the air in front of him like an absolute tard.
DdV mentioned that he'd like to see it from a different perspective, so here you go:

Bus:
Thanks to everyone who voted for this picture. It was by far my favourite and I'm quite surprised that it received so few votes... I know that sounds a bit pretentious, but I'm really proud of it. It was slightly photoshopped.
Thank you Katja for hosting this round, I thoroughly enjoyed participating.

What did you do to Bus in photoshop. It doesn't look manipulated to my untrained eyes.

I think I would have voted for the grey day that didn't get entered. The profile is more fitting in the picture. I really fell in love with the second pic posted of max with the space cropped from the bottom it would have been a for sure pic.

Yes you are right hops, your bus picture is the best and I'm really surprised that it didn't win. I don't know what is wrong with the world we live in, sir.
How was it photoshopped?
It was straightened a tiny bit and the area around the leg in the centre was darkened ever so slightly to accentuate the shoe. As I don't know how to use photoshop it was all done for me while I sat back and smoked cigarettes and contemplated my astounding artistry in a complicated and charismatic sort of way.
Very late entry for the series round*:

Not the greatest pics ever but a nice story unfolding, the first pic sets the scene so well!
