Natural light. What I meant when I said it initially was sunlight filtering through clouds, or interesting light and shadow pics, or Northern Lights, lightning, sunrises/sunsets, etc.
This is what I have been saying all along. I got a bit more broad in the round in the last couple of days cos a fair few people said that they didn't understand what I meant by "Natural Light".
To be honest, I would have preferred it to be purely for "Natural Light Phenomenons" (Lightning, sun beams through clouds, Nordlys, sunrise/sunsets), for want of a better phrase, but I seem to have made a bit of an arse of this round. I have received some very nice arty pics involving clever use of light.
Its a bit late now to rejig the round, so I'll let the voters decide.
You have until Friday to get your photos in. Send them to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com. We have about 28 entries already, so get your pics in.

I've always known that my Minolta Dimage XT took colour out of day time shots, leaving my pics with a bluish hue the whole time. I never had the skill or the know how to fix it using Photoshop/GIMP.
Picasa is perfect for my needs though. Its very novice friendly and much better than ACDSEE for editing pics. Anyway, I have a pic which might be interesting for people to see what I did to it (remembering this is about my 3rd attempt 😉 ). I'd also like some help from the PS/GIMP whizzes.
So this is the original pic... http://community.webshots.com/photo/419655469joLFjU
The foreground is lost completely, because I was exposing to get the colours in the sky.
Adding Fill Light...

Adding Fill Light brought up the detail in the foreground, but completely washed out the sky.
Graduated Tint + Warmed up...
http://community.webshots.com/photo/419657237hiPoVR
I warmed up the photo a little to compensate for my camera's tendency to give everything a bluish tint. I then applied a Graduated Tint filter to darken the sky again, while leaving the foreground bright.
I think the work done is a massive improvement, and is much closer to the actual scene as seen through my eyes. Now that I understand the improvements that can be achieved, I can totally see the need for some optimising using software.
Anyway, the help I was looking for...
As you can see, the Graduated Tint Filter has darkened the trunk of the tree above the tree line. I'd like to have the trunk as it looks before the graduated tint filter was applied. Does anybody have any idea how I'd have to do that? I reckon I'd need to add a layer to the pic in GIMP, but I'm clueless as to how to go about it.
Here's another pic that I was able to warm up a bit in Picasa.

what you need to do is cut out the foreground, then add the filter, then paste the foreground back. I`ll send a 5 min fiddle to you on the normal round email addy. Bearing in mind that its very rough.
But yeah, that was kind of what I was wondering. Is it possible to just copy in the foreground, without it looking like a dog's dinner? And, how do I do it in GIMP?

I always understood it to mean "Natural Light Phenomena" because of the description added in the very first listing of categories in the first photo comp thread as well as several times later. But it seems that some people joined the comp and threads later and missed all the descriptions. Anyway, I am really looking forward to this round. 🙂
Originally posted by NordlysI'm still looking forward to it but didn't check back with the earlier thread...that was a while ago. Anyway nothing phenomenal from me or essjay hope the pics will be okay...
