RHP isn't putting software on your computer. We're talking cookies
saved by the advertiser. Cookies aren't software. They're simple text
data, saved to "remember" something for another page visit.
Now, I understand your question. Is it ok to track people's surfing habits
like this? The question is irrelevant though, because there's nothing that
RHP ...[text shortened]...
to live with being "tracked" unless you're willing to pay for a subscription.
RHP is not forced to use ad-networks. There are many other types of internet advertising that don't use this process. This recent behavioural advertising is just a recent thing. RHP could use advertisers that still use the old model. RHP chooses not too.
RHP is not forced. RHP chooses the ad company. RHP makes a concious decision to use an ad-network that tracks your movements versus an ad-network/company that does not track your movements.
The question is not how do you protect yourself from the snooping of these advertisers. The question is how do you feel that RHP has chosen to use an advertising company that snoops on your web usage?
Again, these are questions, not criticisms.
Originally posted by uzlessI'm glad you've already accepted that the "FACTS" you presented in this post are incorrect.
The ads I see on RHP are to a large degree for sites that I have visited. The only way for these ads to appear (other than sheer coincidence which it's not) is for RHP to be using software than scans your web history. RHP then provides this information to its advertisers.
How do you feel about your privacy being given away by RHP?
It's up to you to give away your own privacy.
You are a willing partner when you sign up to this site. But you can still choose just how private you want to be.
Think about it this way... You want to live in Covent Garden, London because you love the vibe of the place. So you buy a plot to build a one story dwelling. Now, obviously by buying in a very busy, prime location with huge amounts of foot traffic, there are going to be privacy issues.
Do you accuse the person who sold you the land of taking away your privacy? Do you build a glass house to live in and moan about your lack of privacy?
Or do you build a normal house, trying to minimise overlooking issues, accepting that you agreed to having privacy issues by buying in that particular area?
Or do you choose to use 1 way glass, with most of your glazing on your roof to become very private?
People can't be too bothered about their loss of privacy online if they're too lazy to even close the curtains.

Prove your assumption that the specific advertisers on RHP use that form of advertising.
An equally stupid question.
As I said before, and based on the RHP privacy statement regarding the usage of ad-networks, I regularly receive advertisements from sites that i have recently visited since the last time i cleared my cookies.
These are a list of sites advertisements i've just seen today. I have never clicked on a banner advert on RHP so don't start with that excuse.
thestar.com
globeandmail.com
aircanada.com (advertising flights to montreal...i was using aircanada site previously to do just that)
westjet.com
EDIT: just got another one.....sear.ca ( a recent online purchase from there)

The question is NOT should/how do you protect yourself from the snooping of these advertisers.... The question is how do you feel that RHP has chosen to use an advertising company that snoops on your web usage?
Originally posted by uzlessI gave you the answer. I chose to close the curtains, so in no ways, manner or means does RHP "expose me". [EDIT]I am absolutely ambivalent to the fact that RHP asked me nicely if I wouldn't mind if advertisers target my online habits. The fact that when I said no, RHP said, "ok, thanks for your time" is just another interaction which is part of everyday life.

You make it sound as though RHP is one of a sinister few online sites who engage in this practice. In fact, I reckon 99.99% of commercial sites use some form of advertising/stat collection. Google Analytics is everywhere.
If you use the internet, you chose to give away a little bit of your privacy. Its up to you whether you want to act to retain that privacy or not.

You seem to have reading comprehension difficulties.
My web usage isn't exposed.

Back to the issue at hand....
Your web usuage isn't exposed as long as you protect yourself from the exposure RHP subjects you to. I find it interesting that people are no longer as outraged at information gathering about what we do in private. It wasn't long ago that this issue would outrage and inflame the masses. Maybe the message is being lost in the medium....

Idiot.
Maybe if the guy handed you a flier, but instead of a flier he handed you a dictionary, maybe you could put it to good use and provide an appropriate response.
Hmm, maybe you have looked in the dictionary and ARE providing an appropriate response....touche if so, ne pas touche if not.
