Sorry to break to you, Sister of Mercy, but nothing new I listen to sounds as it did in 1995.
This raises another question, which 1995 album was the last bastion of rock and roll according to badmoon?
well, Jesu sounds exactly like Radiohead circa 199X. or just about anything CBC overnight radio has had on for the past 15 years. But give me some band names and songs, I'll download it and if it's good music, I say I can find a band from the past that sounds just like it. Post 5 songs...it's a rainy sunday and i've got nothing to do...ha!
It's hard to pinpoint a last album but i say it happened when green Day and Offspring put out their first albums.
Radio went on a slow decline from there.
Alan Cross from Edge 102 had a good History of New Music show recounting the decline of radio a few years back. I'll try and find the link on the edge 102 website archive but his main point was that the audience changed their attitudes toward music and life in general which was reflected in the type of music that was being made. People just got happier he says...hahaha. Anyway, there may be some truth to that after 5-7 years of angry/sad/bitter/ songs that people wanted a change and bands like Our lady peace, Green Day, got more attention. (Hell, even Pearl Jam started doing 50's remakes about girls!) Also, the good bands of the day stopped putting out albums...Sisters Of Mercy included!
What came out of this happier generation was the rise of Hip Hop. Where once it had been relegated to Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre and the odd one hit wonder (like that Regulator song), it suddenly took off after "Freestyle" and "Jungle" took over from "Euro-Dance" and quickly merged with Rap to form what is now Hip Hop. Hip Hop today started to get mass appeal with guys like Tupac, Big E Small, Snoop and P Diddy....2 live crew anyone?
Hip Hop got all the attention and rock music was left with really crappy bands to hold the flag so the attention went away from them and returns only sporadically when some band puts out a catchy tune. Hip Hop got even catchier and flashier as the younger generation perfered image over substance....see 50 cent. The consolidation of the radio industry by Viacom and Clear Channel saw to it that only songs that would sell got played and this made it worse is still my major sore point. I wish Pandora.com would broadcast to canada again!
There are decent bands, no doubt, but the point here is that they are generally unknown to the masses and specifically are missing from the Radio. ( at least in my hometown Toronto anyway).
While the original poster may not have said it explictly, I think this is what he is getting at.....
It's not that there are no good bands anymore...it's just that you have to pay alot more attention and do your own experimenting, and rely on friends to spread the word on who is good and who is crap.
All we used to have to do was listen to the radio!!!!
It seems that most of the posters here dismiss the point about bad radio and say just go find it yourself.....it would be VERY interesting to see if they still held that opinion if downloading songs wasn't so easy. It'd be pretty hard to stay on top of things if we couldnt' get the music with a couple of keystrokes.
Anyway, post some songs....
I found some links. These are from Alan Cross's History of Modern Music show on Edge 102 in Toronto. They are interesting. Give it a listen. There are 4 parts/per show so click on the next segment when it is finished.

History of Rock
1950's - Birth of Rock and Roll sound
1960's - Psychadelic sound
1970's - evolved to the "Classic Rock" sound
1980's - New Wave/synth sound
1990's - Alt. Rock sound
2000-present - What new sound has this decade produced? To me it just sounds like a recombination of all of the above.
Can anyone tell me how music is distinctly different from the stuff in the past because to me it just sounds like genetically engineered songs...part from here, part from there and voila!
Who from this decade will be remembered 20 years from now?
