Thank the potato famine he's English that's when the largest immigration from Ireland (Rooney is an Irish name) to Liverpool (where he was born) occurred, though there was a significant Irish population in Liverpool from the start of the 19th century ... and thank Thatcherite NHS cuts, leaving the nearest maternity units to North Wales in Chester, that Michael Owen is English

In the States, we say 'a bit special' to mean someone's got an intellect like George Bush (except we say W) or an overripe aubergine (except we say eggplant).

Special he might be but
a) We've not missed him.

Not easy to say, as a City fan, but that was a quite awesome finish.....

I wish I could rec. that post. I think I may have to join.

On a side issue, though, many people these days ludicrously argue for a separate ethic and cultural group called 'Tinkers' by you and me, and 'the Travelling Community' by the rest of the bed-wetting, p.c. liberalised media. Rooney (indeed, a name of Hibernian origin) is a ridiculous talent, but if that argument were to hold any water, then just from the look of his spud-like mug, and generally murderous behaviour, he should really by up-front for the Nation of Knackers (N.O.K.), perhaps with Keano bossing the mid-field.

On a side point, if everyone with an Irish name played for us, then all of Liverpool and half of London, Birmingham and Manchester would be donning the green. And then there's the famous connection: "Oh yeah, Paddy, my nan was Irish". Sure, would there be anyone left over there to play for England at all?

As to the Roon, our team doesn't miss him one bit (damn you all! )! :'(

And, I don't know if you follow rugby league (I certainly don't), but the fellow who has been captaining Great Britain and Ireland to great success over the last few years is another candidate. He's now switching to the true code, and who's he going to play for? England! 😠

Ah well. You did give us Jackie Charlton, so I suppose we can call it even. Go on Jackie! What a gent!
