Oops!
Perhaps I'd better spare my opinions for AFTER I've seen the movie.

And that, of course, is the problem.

I saw the movie last night, and I hated it. And unfortunately, 3 of the 4 main characters (5 if you count Marvin) are not British. I think that was a big goof. OK, I don't think Trillian is supposed to be British, but still. I like Mos Def, but I didn't like him in this movie. Same with Sam Rockwell. A lot of lines lifted from the book just don't sound right coming out of their mouths. I also thought the revisions to the story weren't very funny at all.

I don't mind the book being reinterpreted, after all movies aren't books, but I really think HHGTTG fails on a cinematic level. I just wasn't interested in what was happening on-screen. It doesn't help that most of the audience is so familiar with the (funnier) source material either.

I liked the film. I went in with few expectations and it surprised me. from the adverts I expected to hate the characters, and yet they grew on me (I never quite got over Trillian's accent though) I expected none of the plot to be there, and yet it was quite loyal to the books (except for the two stops before magrathea). You have to remember that Douglas wrote part of the screenplay before he died, and that he wrote many different versions of Hitchhiker's Guide and no two were ever quite the same.

The Intro song is great too.

Another problem was the fact the scriptwriter, by his own admission, had never read the books or any Douglas Adams material:

No, it's not necessarily so as "Sean of the Dead" was made with American money and so has the League of Gentleman movie due up next month. In fact, most films that get wide distribution cannot avoid using American money.

What's your opinon about this movie?
Difficult humour to convey on the big screen but they did okay. About what I expected.

Afterall it's very rare for a film to be as good/ better than the book; blade runner is the only one i can think of.

Plus Zooey Deschanel (Trillian) was excellent.

That a UK film isn't automatically bad just because it has US funding. Just look at the track record of Working Title Films, for a long while now they've been owned by Universal Pictures.

My favourite Working Title Picture is probably 'The Big Lebowski' or one of the other Coen Bros. films Tim and Eric produced.

I would class 'The Big Lebowski' as one of my favourite films regardless of the stable it came from - who are you, man?! What are your favourite films?

Fight Club and Trainspotting are two that spring to mind, but you're right...it is a rare thing.
