I don't think I'm creative enough to do something without seeing it. I have played a couple MUD's on the internet but those get boring. I prefer to see what the heck I'm doing instead of making it up. I think that's what D&D is right? You right alot of stuff down and create your own world, but you can use pre-made ones too right?

D&D is still my all-time favorite RPG... mostly because it's the only one I've played where *I* get to be in control... and I love being the DM. Of course, I haven't played S&S or any of the other D&D wanna-be's, but what's the point, really? There's no way they can be as good as D&D!
Jeez, a thread on Role Playing Games and nobody has brought up Dungeons and Dragons? I despair for the geeks of today. I was raised on D&D, Gary Gygax is like a favorite uncle. I've traveled throughout the Forgotten Realms, Krynn, Greyhawk ...[text shortened]... l in storage...I just couldn't bring myself to throw them away.

I still remember my faithful ADD RPG sidekick Thorg, constitution 18, strength 18/00 , IQ 4, Charisma 3 :or something along those lines.
"Thorg, go play with those nice blink dogs while the rest of the party goes this way." "Thorg, would you mind going and asking those nice Lemures which way to the surface; we'll just wait here till you get back"
Oddly, I don't remember a single one of the "heroic" characters, just Thorg..
Somewhere on a shelf, I still have the AD&D books too. And you can rationalize keeping them because they I'm sure they are or will be collectors items son.
Now for a moment of free association...
Along those same geekish lines (and times), there was this hilarious graphics novel called "The Adventures of Samauri Cat" that I had back then in the days of yore. Really a total geek inside joke graphics novel; to give you an idea of the completely nerdy silliness involved, one of the demonic villians of the story was "Az'moth" which was a creature based on HP Lovecraft ideas...and drawn to look just like the science and science fiction writer Isaac Asimov; well an oozing demonic Isaac Asimov, complete with frightening giant sideburns.
Sadly, I lost my copy years ago, got nostalgic and decided to go ebaying for a copy. ZOWEEE. It was selling as a collectors item for something ridiculous like 50-100 dollars! Then I REALLY wished I had my copy.
End of free association....
Ok, back I go back to the wacky world of .... Science.
Ciao!

Originally posted by OmnislashThe Dragonlance books were the first fantasy books I ever read, way back in elementary school. They, more than anything, turned me on to RPG's. Although I always preferred to play D&D in the Forgotten Realms, I know all about Krynn. If I remember corrrectly, Justarius Darkstar was the head of the red robed mages. He was a big guy who was crippled by his test at the High Tower; he now sports a serious limp. Of course Raistlin was also red robed, before being possessed by Fistandantilus during his test, after which he slowly converted to black robes.

Originally posted by bbarrI played D&D for a while, but never worked out how to be cunning with the spells. Mind you, the people I played with just wanted to break stuff (and that was the 'good' ones 😞) so whenever I played a mage they demanded Fireballs. The big problem with D&D (don't know about other games) is that after you'd got some experience and items you became FAR more powerful, so as a DM you couldn't just put the players in a city, because they'd be able to beat the entire garrison and become overlords (or in the case of my group, burn the city to the ground and move on.) On the other hand, it's not very believable that you're constantly fighting a variety of strong monsters, all of which are of a level similar to or greater than the players.

Originally posted by bbarrAbsolutely! You remember very well for it being so long. There's even a guy here at RHP named after Dalamar the Dark. A fun world that one is. Krynn is still my favorite, but I can really understand you love of the Forgotten Realms (#2 on my chart). 😉

I know there's a number of RPG players in here. What is your favorite RPG (paper, console, etc.) and why?
I give my props to Final Fantasy VII. The best of old school in my opinion.
as this thread has already pointed out, RPGs are role-play games, and FF VII is anything but 'old' in that respect!
D&D was grand, but AD&D was the winner. First ed. was my fav on that: 2nd ed. ruined the priest classes and the specialised fighters. Not sure on 3rd.
Note that some yonger folk may recognise "Baldurs Gate", "Neverwinters Night" etc: they are all AD&D 3rd edition games, but played on PC (and online), rather than in your head.
But what about Traveller; Chivillry & Sorcery; MERPs; DC Heroes; Paranoia; Star Wars; RuneQuest; Tunnels & Trolls (older than D&D!); Toons; Stormbringer; Judge Dredd; Dr Who; Star frontiers; Bone Hill; Call of Cuthulu; Star Trek; Marvel super heroes... the list really does go on and on...
