MS has sent me an automatic update which it wants me to install called 'Windows Genuine Advantage Notification' (KB905474) which apparently will tell them what I have installed on my computer,

Is this a form of 'spyware'?

What should I do? ( I haven't installed it yet)

I think it's a new "feature" MS is using to clamp down on software piracy. I saw it when I installed Windows Media Player 11. AFAIK it isn't spyware.

Just typical MS @$$ware.

Yep just M$ crap - you can install or not install, it's up to you. You will be continually asked if you don't though. If your Windows is legit, there's no harm in installing it.

The counterpoint to this argument is "Do you really want anyone to know everything about what you install on your computer?"

Exactly!

My computer is legit but if MS can look at my windows application, what else can it look at?

If your XP came from a dodgy retailer or is from your friend's CD, you will be in hot water, however XP prices are dropping so you can get one on the cheap. If your XP is genuine then you can sleep well at night.

Next time use google, WGA has been around for a long time. In fact there's even OGA (Office Genuine Advantage). Use google if you don't know what that is.

it doesnt do any harm dont worry - first of all it will check your copy of xp is legit then it will check what security is lacking on your pc and install relevant updates or patches for it... if you only have sp1 it will install sp2 as well... no, its not spyware, ms dont record any personal info from your pc at all, could you imagine the outrage if they did??? spyware records personal info and passes it on, ms records what state the operating system is in then installs relevant patches... i have no idea what happens if you dont install the genuine notification, i dont know if you can get updates still because the server has no idea what condition the operating system is in to download the relevant udates... i would strongly recommend you install it, it updates all your security and really tightens up the os, also, internet exployer has a lot of back door access that hackers can exploit, updates will rewrite the code to prevent this from happening... and no, i dont work for microsoft!!!

Thanks. I've installed all other updates that come along but this one bothers me.

See also the thread 'Microsoft update' - I can do without that sort of hassle!

Microsoft even allows pirated copies of windows [xp and before - dunno about vista yet] to get critical/security updates; and likewise if you don't get this WGA you can still get them. There has been loads of reports of false claims of peoples Operating Systems being pirated copies recently. [another one in the other thread here it seems]

If you are on automatic updates you will get it. 🙁

I've really had it with this company! Now i have to ring them up and get this rubbish sorted out. I feel violated, i really do! I have to install updates because their operating system is so insecure, but the biggest head ache i have to deal with is MS itself! If i got the occasional virus, it'd be less hassle than dealing with all the stupid STUPID sh;t this company routinely put me through. I spend my life jumping through hoops for these bastards! I've had enough of it. 😠

WGA came out a long long time ago so no one should be having any issues with this. I would never trust any third party and get updates from them instead of MS. You may want to use a rootkit checker if you use software from unofficial sources.
