Was I the only one expecting ESofSM to be a great film?
Nope, and it lived up to my high expectations + some.

...no one was slashed in the lake house even though the lake house was made almost entirely of glass and their was a party where i think the sandwhiches were cut with a knife...why watch a movie that cuts people when you can watch a timeless movie about true love ?....

For the exact same reason you're not watching it now.

I guess Truman Capote was a creep, but that has been his only "non-threatening, snob" role.

How about these?

Eddie & the Cruisers

The Dead Zone

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Low expectations on all, and have watched them all many times now.

I agree with V for Vendetta, Eternal Sunshine, and the Truman Show.

My additions to the list:

Akira

Birdman of Alcatraz (thought it was going to be good, but liked it more than I thought I would)

That movie was so great. One of my all time favorites. But what in that movie made you think it was a teen comedie?!

just thought of another movie - 'confidence' ... i avoided the movie like plague after watching the trailer, thought it's going to be a mindless, boring, incredibly predictable flick with a three words story line. and i was pleasantly surprised by it when eventually got to watch it.

hmmm. The thing is that I never got that impression and never knew that anyone had.
Even though the name can lead you in that direction.

I went through the same series of reactions as you did. Still, the sequence with the plastic bag irritated the hell out of me.
