Wife: "Do these jeans make me look fat?"
Husband: "You know, I really like you in those black pair".

A lie, or just the "right" answer?

Depends if you want to get friendly later, right answer. πŸ™‚ Of course we know it is a lie if you have to ask the question! πŸ˜‰

There is a "technical" term for this but it eludes me...not deflection, but? πŸ€”

No. Don't be so silly. Perhaps you can't tell the difference between jokes and people lying about themselves because they feel empowered or liberated by online disinhibition.
Or perhaps you are missing my point (I won't say it's going over your head as I don't like that posting style).

There are situations in which giving a dishonest account is not classified as lying because social rules have been constructed that define it as being a different behaviour e.g. the after dinner speaker or the humorous arms falling off story.

Social rules evolve within the community and they are held as the community's truths so the idea that it is okay for the after dinner speaker to embellish the truth but it is not okay for the person in court becomes a social rule.

On line communities do not have the same years of history as real world communities so there appear to be less rules or truths constructed that are agreed by the whole community. This is apparent by the disparate perspectives of where and when exact truth should be expected and examined as if in a court room and where a lot of licence should be completely acceptable and seen as making the forums more entertaining.

Your reactions to what I said suggest that it has, indeed, gone over your head. If you prattle on for long enough, that may well be obscured by the sheer amount of words you post since it happened.

I think some people lie about themselves online because of a kind of disinhibition that has nothing whatsoever to do with how they would acquit themselves in a court of law.

I think this kind of reinvention and misrepresentation ~ lying ~ is pathetic, albeit probably completely harmless.

This was the Buddha's way.

Truthful goes beyond telling lies. It means being truthful and honest, but also using speech to benefit others (not just ourselves).

Well done.

Like I said. It seems you can't tell the difference between jokes - about things like someone saying their arms fell off because of a vaccination - and people lying about themselves because they feel empowered or liberated by online disinhibition. It just seems to me you're a bit silly.

Why are you addressing this to me?

If you want to witter on about how you think fictitious elements of jokes are "lies", pitch it to someone else.

I think a venue such as this is best served if candour is the main currency.

Well said.

I was considering if we could replace integrity for candour, but no - I think you are correct.

I don't know why you people think I have a big ass, you all must have big asses is all I can assume so you figure everyone does. NOT TRUE!!!!

A lie is a lie, the reason doesn't matter.

You want to lie to save feelings, it is still a lie!
