The Murderer's Home field recordings by Alan Lomax made at Mississippi State Penitentiary in 1947. Worksongs and spirituals of the chaingangs - songs of heart rending beauty and hope to move even the most cynical.

I heartily recommend the Jessye Norman recording of the Four Last Songs over the Schwarzkopf. Betty does them well, but Jessye is larger than LIFE ! And the orchestral accompaniment is deelish!

The Blood of Cu Chulain - Mychael/Jeff Danna

This is the theme song to the movie The Boondock Saints... GREAT movie, and one of the best songs out there.

I am a rock - Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel:
"If I never loved, I never would have cried..."

Murder in the red barn - Tom Waits
"Roadkill has its seasons, just like anything...there's possums in the Autumn and there's farm cats in the Spring."

Peggy Gordan - Traditional
"I put my head tae a cask o Brandy, it was my fancy so to do..."

Scots Wha Hae - Robert Burns
"Scots wha hae wae Wallace bled,
Scots wham Bruce hae aftimes led,
Welcome tae your gory bed,
Or tae victory

Nows the day and nows the hour,
See the front o battle lour,
See approach proud Edwards power,
Chains and slavery

Wha will be a traitor knave,
Wha can fill a cowards grave
Wha sae base as be a slave,
let him turn and flee,

Wha for Scotlands king and law,
Freedoms sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand and freeman fa,
let him follow me.

By oppressions woes and pains,
By your sons in servile chains,
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free.

Lay the proud usurpers low,
Tyrants fall in every foe,
Libertys in every blow,
let us do or dee."

It's most definitely the video that makes this recording so powerful.

Thanks. The "Four Songs" have been recorded by many oustanding artists. One of them is Jessye Norman.

Sorry you couldn't get the link to play.

EDIT: I've just read your post Steely. Jessye is indeed majestic.

This si the first song to bring tears of JOY to my eyes.

Thank You
For Giving to The Lord
(Words and Music by Ray Boltz)

I dreamed I went to heaven
and You were there with me
We walked upon the streets of gold
Beside the crystal sea.

We heard the angels singing
Then someone called your name.
You turned and saw this young man
And he was smiling as he came.

And he said, "Friend you may not know me now"
And then he said, "But wait"
You used to teach my Sunday School
When I was only eight.

And every week you would say a prayer
Before the class would start.
And one day when you said that prayer
I asked Jesus in my heart."

(Chorus)
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am so glad you gave.

Then another man stood before you
And said, "Remember the time
A missionary came to your church
And his pictures made you cry.

You didn't have much money
But you gave it anyway.
Jesus took the gift you gave
And that's why I am here today."

(Chorus)
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am so glad you gave.

One by one they came
Far as the eye could see
Each life somehow touched
By your generosity.

Little things that you had done
Sacrifices made.
Unnoticed on the earth
In heaven now proclaimed.

And I know up in heaven
You're not supposed to cry.
But I am almost sure
There were tears in your eyes.

As Jesus took your hand
And you stood before the Lord.
He said, "My child look around you.
Great is your reward."

(Chorus twice)
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am so glad you gave.

Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am a life that was changed.
Thank you for giving to the Lord
I am so glad you gave.
