Quotes of the day!!
It is a intense, personal rivalry built on a parental battle. England, the mother, does not understand her offspring, seeing Australia as brash and arrogant. The child, Australia, is determined to throw off the shackles of authority and stand on its own.
"This was not about sport, it was not about rugby, it was about something far greater than that - it was about nationalism," said Australian Mick Martin, 66, as he hobbled on his crutches.
"There is nothing better than beating the English and nothing worse than being beaten by the English," said Martin.
For Martin and many Australians in Sydney it would be an uncomfortable night, with the strains of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" drifting across the city.

"I think rather than reduce the number of points for field goals, increasing the number of points for tries might be the way to go," he said.
Laporte agreed with Jones that reducing the value of drop-goals and penalties would not be beneficial for the game.
"If you reduce the points for penalties you will just see more infringements," he said.
England are world champions, live with it!!

Tonight I've watched the Wallabies lose, stepped in cat poo, and had my left testicle crushed by a fist sized slab of concrete (seriously). And after all that, all I've got to say is...

P.S. Rugby League is better.
I wanted to start a new thread, but after drinking beer from a very early hour this morning, even a couple of hours kip on the sofa hasn't given me enough energy to do anything beyond post here.
Happy? You better believe it.
Hollywood script, Hollywood ending. I was suffering from severe stress before the winning drop ball. – and you don’t see tears from my eyes very often (particularly in a packed pub with friends). 😀 😀 😀

Hmmm, maybe you could write a little script that spams the forums with smiley faces and "Sweet Chariot" lyrics every time England does well in some sporting event...

Well England are doing much better nowadays.
Just think back about 4-5 years ago when you couldn't win a single cricket / rugby game, no tennis player even got close to winning a match at Wimbledon, the national football team was struggling etc. etc.
There has been somewaht of a sport renaissance in England these last few years.
It was England against Australia and South Africa, no? I could have sworn Watson thought he was Australia's 16th man. If England had lost, I would have wanted blood. The score of 17-20 was a little flattering to the Ozzies although I am completely bias even when trying to be objective. What the hell, let us rejoice! WE WON, WE WON, Look you Australian p***** WE WON! 😛
Originally posted by CrowleyAgain you are sadly mistaken, Even though Englands football team has not been on top of the world, since our penalties defeat to Germany in the '90, English football and its national team has been team to be proud of. As for the rugby, finalists in '91, regular winners of the 5/6 nations, semi finalists in '95, hardly suggests a team that cant win a game. Whilst the cricket team has been hit and miss, Australia have proved to be far superior to everyone else, we have been up there or there abouts as one of the best of the rest (2 Cricket World cup finals). Your idea of struggling and everyone elses are miles apart. To win things you need a little luck and in the past luck/decisions have gone against us, but today it came right, even with the ref looking to help Australia whenever possible. Leading upto the final Eddie Jones, the Australia coach, was the only Australian to go on record and actually show us the respect we deserve. Your own national teams are in far worse disarray than England's ever have been. The simple fact is, for the next 4 years, England can call themselves Rugby world champions and deservedly so. Six Nations Grand Slam Champions, nemesis to the southern hemisphere and now WORLD CHAMPIONS! (God that sounds good to an Englishman!)

😵
(Before you ask, yes we are going to milk every minute of it)
Just remember that SA didn't play in the rugby World cup until '95 so can you really count yourselves finalists in the '91 WC? Before '94 we had a really great rugby team and the history books of the WC could've been quite different.
EDIT: Regular winners of the five and now six nations? Do you even count those?
Are you guys really gonna whine about that one forward pass call made by Watson, because that was the only mistake he made. Too much of refereeing is based on interpretation, you can't really call a ref on too many decisions.
And BTW, I actually tried to compliment England on the obvious upswing in most of the sports they compete in.
What I tried to say wasn't that they lost everything, but that they weren't really a world power in any sport. I'm talking about continued success - not a few good performances in the odd world cup.
So much for that ðŸ˜

No-one remembers the runner-up.

I don't think you can falter the achievements of either England or Australia in '91, SA were not there for a reason, and that was not the fault of either team in the final.
On the other side of the coin though, for a nation that had been excluded from international competition for a number of years SA has shown remakable success since it was allowed back into the fold. Rugby World champions, a cricket test team that went straight in as the 2nd or 3rd best in the world, and even the football team was not bad.
The fact remains though that Austrailia is "the" sporting nation on the planet, they invest in their talent and at a political level they have ensured that sport is part of their culture. If you look at the state of sport in the UK it makes England being world champions even more remarkable!

Just bringing this thread back.
It appears a recently bug had decided to make this thread fall back a couple of pages - the last post date was incorrect.
(So no, it hadn't been moderated away)
Try to get a fix up for this soon once the problem is identified.

You disappoint dude.
P.S What does your middle initial stand for? Something weird maybe? Like "Jabberwokkerwogga"
For your information I spent the night celebrating my friend's 21st and as he has a very generous father the beer was free and flowing like water. It was pure luck that I managed to turn the computer on; it took me 20 minutes to plug the mike in, another 15 to remember where the windows recording thingy was, and finally 20 minutes to upload the bloody thing. It is a credit to my perseverance and tenacity that that little wav file made it all the way over to your computer at all. There's just no pleasing some people.
P.s. The j actually stands for Jay (just making my stalker's jobs that little bit easier). Of course that's short for Jaytogaohlaybiscuitbarrelsmith.
