It's way, WAY better than what existed before: a popularity contest. The opportunity for expressing disagreement or disapproval is paramount in a civil society. Allowing only positive votes denies the independent minds the possibility of equality. Herd mentality is only good for cattle. 'Thinning the herd' through the elimination of the 'cool kids clique' and their cattle followers was necessary.

The Things We Don't Talk About:
'We don't talk about' people, places or things for the purpose of deceiving other people. There are no such things as white or grey or black lies or any other hue of the rainbow; all lies are by definition lies. However, there are two relevant online/offline categorical distinctions: a) covert lies which refer to the premeditation of promoting a lie; and b) overt lies which refer to an act of seizing opportunities to do the verbal deed.
