Dear RHPers,
It is with no small amount of relief that I now find myself in a position to reveal to you the truth about my creation, this little world that I have made - Red Hot Pawn. The truth is that RHP is not primarily a chess site - it is in fact an extended sociological study aimed at investigating a number of aspects of online behaviour. That study has now been completed.
There is no Russ, really - nor a Chrismo: they are merely invented personas, as were a number of 'users' of the site. I have adopted the R&C personas because one aspect of the study is how users interact with site admins, who have virtually god-like powers in their domain. Other users who are really me are: Cribs, Tuco, StarValleyWy, Misslead, No1Marauder, RBHill and STANG - extreme personalities designed to 'push the envelope' of online interaction. There are others. BBarr is one of my favourites - he really took on a life of his own, as did Darvlay and Shavixmir. Of course, i also participated here in the forums as dfm65 - that one is the closest to my real personality.
I hope you will not be angry at the deception, but i know some of you - especially those who have been at the site for almost the whole duration of the study - will be. All i can say in defence is that it had to be done this way. I hope to use the data I gleaned here to someday improve various dimensions of online communication.
Unfortunately, funding for the project has now ceased, so the site will wrap up sometime in the next fortnight. Thank you for your participation, and all the best. I have come to like several of you.
