Acording to the book "The Sociopath Next Door" 1 in 25 Americans is a sociopath, a figure that the author psychologist Martha Stout obtained from three journal articles and a U.S. government source.
One example is "Doreen", who lied about her credentials to get work at a psychiatric institute (LOL!), where she shamelessly manipulated her colleagues and even a patient.

I think many here have become somewhat thin skinned.
Don't forget, this is a chess site, and these are internet message boards.
Things said in jest are often taken too serious. While things spoken in earnest are often shugged off.
Your thoughts?
Originally posted by Grampy Bobbyi forgot to mention that while most people would be content to fade into the background once the ambulance arrived, you'd be sure to get the telephone number of the poor guy who collapsed. you'd pester him for decades to come with phone calls, so you could remind him (in a nuanced way, of course) of how you'd saved his life, forcing him to thank you yet again. if you lived in the same city, you'd suggest meeting up with him and his family over a cold beer, so you could all reminisce over the events of that fateful afternoon, and you could bask in the gratitude of his wife and children. you'd wrangle invitations to their family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Xmas - they would be a little uncomfortable at this encroachment into their lives, but would feel guilty not to respond to your broad hints. instinctively you would play upon this guilt to wedge yourself in closer. you'd meet their friends and tell them you were also a close family friend, mentioning almost as an afterthought that you once saved the guy's life. and all the while, even as they genuinely were grateful that you had saved the guys life, they would be increasingly creeped out by you.
Fantastic progress within the short span of a few of months. Suppressed rejection
of authority symbols and mechanical ambivalence, verging on raw and unbridled
hatred, now seem to be gradually morphing into coherency with almost each post.
you don't want to ignore me. i am asked to join many games of whist and even asked to attend many weekends at the great houses in the Lake District. i have been viewed as a 21st century oscar wilde ( absent the nancy dance ) for my interesting and endless viewpoints on the world. to ignore me is to ignore the red fox out on the grassy lawn at dawn...time to get the beagles out to begin the hunt !

i like to take a less jaundiced view. i think it's reasonable to believe that any regular poster in this forum - without exception - would stop to help someone who, say collapsed in the street, would administer first aid to the best of their ability and call an abulance if necessary. as opposed to a sociopath, who would be more likely to rifle the poor guy's wallet and scoot.

What about people who become thin skinned only once they reach adulthood. I don't think there's necessarily a childhood corollary here.
the immaturity of such 'adults', not to pass any judgement on their parents.
