If there is an issue that is a topic for debate, put it in the debate forum.

A piece of sound advice.

If someone wants to just have a general discussion on theology, that's fine too. A single thread should accomodate them, and anyone that is interested can participate.

Note the word GENERAL.

Note the phrase "A single thread should accomodate them...."

So where is the solution?

Maybe we could have a spam button and when say 10 members hit the spam button it is moderated

The solution is for a moderator to send a private message to the individual who is doing the 'spamming'. Point out that they are abusing the forum and advise that they need to keep their subject of interest contained in one thread.

Be congenial, but also warn them that if they continue to abuse the forum they will be banned from using it.

Then if they continue with the spamming, ban them.

That's how I would do it.

Spam I don't think is a proper term in a forum since spam is defined as Unrequsted Commercial Email.. In any event, this bible study topic could be considered AS spam since it essentially is nothing more than a hit and run tactic. As to how much is too much, that's something the mod (read you) has to decide. The tread can be locked or deleted at the mod's (again read you) discretion.

It is absurd to shun RBHILL's religion posts from the debates forum
just because you are uninterested or overwhelmed by the amount
of discussion they spawn. I, for one, happen to be completely unintersted
in politics, but you won't find me complaining about the numerous
politics threads there, even though the quality of debate within
those threads is as poor as that in the religion threads.

How do you know where to put political discussion? Look at the
forum descriptions. How do you know where to put religious
discussion? Look in the same place. I don't see how this is not
clear.

Cribs,

Please tell me what debate there is in the bible study thread. A thread that serves a purpose to ONLY promote views and neither debate NOR discussion has no place in a debate forum. We can always make the thread read only and only allow Rob to post and it would be funny cause it wouldn't make a difference in the threads content.

Which thread in particular would you like me to address? If you mean
the most recent "Bible Study" thread that got moved to General, look
at how it has since evolved. We are engaged in a specific discussion
about the requirements for salvation as supported by the Bible.
I am trying to find holes in RBHILL's notion of salvation, and he
is filling those with Bible verses. Just because others have
interjected with nonsense doesn't mean that a debate between
at least RB and myself doesn't exist.

CMon Cribs be realistic. That thread is a bible study soapbox and there really is no debate or arguing involved. If you want to debate the topic start a debate thread about it but don't title the thread "bible study" and we can debate, argue or whatever to our hearts content or you can continue with Rob via PM. Just a "bible study" thread has no place in a debate forum. Maybe Rob exhibited bad judgement when he entitled the thread? Should I post an agnostic "bible study" in the debates thread and ignore comments cause they are not needed? Shold the mighty cult leader Rob post an atheist anti-bible study thread in the debates forum and ignore comments cause he is not looking to debate but promote his views?

We all know that RB is not the most proficient among us
at written communication. Perhaps he did give the thread
a misleading title. But perhaps he seriously meant for
us to complete the exercises so that we could debate and discuss
the answers. I took the initiative to start the real discussion
and the debate started.

I think both of the hypothetical threads you propose would
be both legitimate and interesting. I guarantee they would
grow and grow.

I think you totally missed the point of what I wrote. No doubt the threads would grow but as I said no debate is wanted by me so I am only going to respond weekly and Rob (NOT RBHILL but the cult leader from Ann Arbor) is not interested in anything other than the thread expressing his views so he is not going to respond. Now as to what you think RBHILL meant. I am sorry but apparently you do not know the first thing about a christian bible study. It is not meant for debate but if there is any discussion it is in the hopes of converting another's views. You did start a debate and for that I commend you but the ensuing debacle was not a debate or a discussion. What followed was general remarks and attempts to belittle RBHILL's post.
