He posted the following in a discussion of tournament timeouts:
"I think that when someone asks someone not time him out and he puts his vacation setting on...you shouldn't do it..."
I guess going back on your word is easier on the ego than a potential loss to a ~1300 player.

Originally posted by LivingLegendI looked at those games, Olav, and you only had a slight advantage in one of them. In your game as white your position was actually worse. There was no clear victory in either game, and your claim that you were winning is a lie.

Originally posted by dfm65This is really a job for Russ, maybe there should be a SUSPEND button, to be used by any player for say a maximum of 15 days per year. This would prevent any action at all on their games. As for the vacation button, if I was playing a serious over the board game and my opponent decided to go out shopping or to the pub, he/she would lose on time, that is a simple and fundamental rule of competitive chess, if you can't play to the time limit you lose. period. However to claim timeouts in friendly games that seems rather extreme. Just my view of course. Is chess an art or a sport?
I'd like to thanks all those who were cool enough not to time me out while I was away (with my vacation setting on). As a community service announcement, here's a list of those who obviously felt that their precious rating needed boosting. Beware, these guys will NOT heed your vacation setting:

Originally posted by LivingLegendThat's fine, you can TO people who don't move within the specified time frame, but that's what the vacation setting is there for. This means the player can't move, because he/she is away.
After that, it sais, In Tournament and Clan games I always take time-outs.

Just a little 'in the spirit of the game' courtesy is needed in these situations.
Originally posted by LivingLegendwhat is it i need to tell you? the vacation icon says it all...do i need to message you personally saying 'please please Mr Living Legend, sir, could i please take a couple of days vacation, and please, please be merciful and don't time me out'? Get a grip on your ego, son. And, although i'm biased, and with a ~1300 rating perhaps i'm not the best judge, i think the games were far from decided. At any rate, I'll take bbarr's (rating 2000+) assessment of the positions over yours any day...

LL, get a life. there's more to it than that little number. this is supposed to be fun.
having said all that, I bear no grudges. i wish you the best of luck in your games, and hope you learn from this.

Originally posted by LivingLegendI make a similar exception (read my profile) for a reason - taking forever in tournament and clans games is disrespectful to other players on the site, since it can affect literally dozens of other games while people wait for a single person to finish their games. More so in tournaments, in clan games I will still give players lots of leeway. Friendly games should be just that; friendly.

at any rate, for me the issue is this: i'm here to improve and enjoy my chess, in a relaxed environment, with people i like and trust (as far as that is possible without face to face contact). people who feel the need to boost their rating by resorting to measures such as timing people out while they're clearly away are taking it all a little too seriously for my liking, and i'd rather just not play them. hence my suggestion for a register of players who agree to forsake some of their timeout rights for the sake of good games in good company.

That is exactly why when I joined your clan I requested we play with timeouts of 14 days. This allows me to take a week off, like i will be doing soon without worrying about any games.

I thought we agreed not to timeout clan games if the on vacation setting was activated, I know I agreed to this with Rhymester in a thread. For the record I will not timout people who have their on vacation activated or have told me - this applies to all game formats. Other than that it really depends on how long the claim win has been sitting there and what sort of mood I am in.
