I think Lyn is quite correct; if I read her post correctly, 1990 is the year of the quote she got the
historical note from, and the "fat lady signing" itself dates back to about 1840-1850ish, ie Richard
Wagner's time.
Of course all I know about opera and classical music I learned from bugs bunny. Which is,
suprisingly, about as good an introduction to classical music as I've run across, Bugs and Elmer had
mighty fine taste in muscial scores.

The last time I looked, we still have 25 games unfinished. ROW
needs 6.5 points to take the tournament, assuming the playlist is still
current. (showing a total of 60 games being played in the tournament)
We can still win, but we will need to take most of the remaining games.
I don't know how up-to-date the site is.
Ron says:
The time of the last update can be found at the bottom of the page; it's in greenwich mean time
(same as RHP time I think). Behind the page is a script (Python) that automatically checks the
status of the games and updates the web page accordingly. What is not ( not yet - anyone know
how to edit a unix crontab file?) automatic is the timining of when its run; generally once (or twice)
a day, unless poor Ron can't log onto the machine to run the script, like this weekend!
Anyways; would people like to see the results and (rough) times of the most recent wins posted at
the top of the page? Would make it easier for folks to know what if anything has changed.
What would make it better would be to kill those million
monkeys...hehehe just kidding.
Ron..you have done a tremendous job on it...I think I have already
told ya that...but you could make my name look better in that Captain
America spot...some little java twinkles or something..hehehe
Thanks

Well, let's be honest-- anyone who is here playing serious chess, as
opposed to just playing to pass some time at work (and there is
nothing wrong with that, so please don't think I'm claiming some sort
of "superiority" for the "serious" players-- the "time-passers" may well
be having the most fun!) is "gunning" for the folks at the top of the
heap. Of course, people like me may be gunning for them with a BB
gun from 200 yards away-- but I still have my dreams!

The main reason I play chess is that I can lose myself in it...even if it
is just for a few minutes it is a wonderous feeling..to just stare at the
64 squares and see it for what it really is...art.
We all can paint a pretty picture...or just make a mess of the
canvas...either way..the end result is the same feeling...love of the
game and the challenge of making it a little better next time.
It keeps me awake at night..the variations..I see them in my sleep.
Oh well...those are my thoughts.
Dave
I agree 100 percent that people play here for different reasons-- in
fact, I started here as a way of keeping in touch with distant friends in
a slightly more interesting format than plain old e-mail. But I got
bitten by the addiction-bug along the way. Now I take my games far
more seriously-- but I make damn sure I have just as much fun.
By the way, congrats on YOUR record-- stunning performance. Glad
you got a chuckle out of the BB gun reference-- with Dave's help, I'll
be packing a .38 someday.
