@fmf saidI have come across across sales trainers who used to use this term a lot. These commercial “psychologists” seem to love the phase but I don’t think I understand it or find it a useful tool for talking to people about developing better habits, adopting new skills or changing mindsets.
Have you ever unlearned anything?
While I agree with the principle of unlearning, it is a term and an explanation for the cognitive process which I didn’t find helpful in training as I think it creates a sort of initial barrier rather than facilitating revised thinking.
What is I think a better approach is to move ahead with good insightful teaching of a new idea, such that the learner accepts it, then they train it through themselves into a skill, then the coach coaches for optimal performance.
I.e. Teach > train > coach.
“Unlearning” doesn’t need to be mentioned.

@divegeester saidI don't know whether Indonesia Phil agrees, but further to a bit of a discussion recently about driving on Indonesian roads, I think British drivers have to "unlearn" the 'highway code' they use when driving here for their own safety and for the safety of others.

@great-big-stees saidI used to think that, but then I went to this camp where I learned it was all wrongthink and now I am happy.
There are certain countries who have a system to help some of their "naughty" citizens unlearn, right?

@relentless-red saidSo it does work then. I was once offered a stay at a similar "camp", but lasted only 3 days at which point they thought it better to just stamp "persona non grata" in my passport and escort me out of the country.

@very-rusty saidAgreed.
It has been my experience in a lot of ways the children teach the parents. There is no guide book you can really follow. Lots of people have tried but unsuccessfully in my humble opinion.

There is no word childing - but we invented a word parenting, as if it is a verb.

Perhaps ask if I could survive in the woods by myself at age 11 or 12? 😉
