I am not sure about 'clans' and 'clubs,' since I am also not a subscriber and only get on to play a game occasionally. What does a 'club' mean?

Go to "Community" and look at all the clubs. You can ask to join any club as a non sub. Some are mere social outlets. Others are serious about chess. Pick one and apply to join by messaging club leader through join club function button
